Post news Report RSS Beta 2.3 Particle and Facial Effects

This week we take a look at the Particle System and Facial Effects including demonstration videos.

Posted by on

Hey everyone,

This weekend we're bringing you some awesome media of 2.3 effects.
In our first video, we have a demonstration of some of the new particle effects in 2.3. Included in the video are:

    pvk_arena Sudden Death
    pvk_cathedral Sudden Death
    Berserker Special

In our second video, we take a quick look at the facial animation system, including lip syncing for player taunts. Included are:

Pirate Captain lip syncing and facial expressions
Viking Berserker lip syncing and facial expressions

And last, we get a sneak peak at next week's article on pvk_forgotten.

pvk_arena Sudden Death

For starters, pvk_arena has seen some really cool changes. Most of you are familiar with the current Sudden Death in pvk_arena, which includes lava and crows. Well, 2.3 Arena has received some awesome additions for Sudden Death. There's a brand new atmosphere to the arena, which now includes a nearby Volcano. When sudden death kicks in, the Volcano becomes active and the eruption changes the entire atmosphere of the map. The sky turns a bloody red, ashes and embers encase the players and fire rains from the sky.

pvk_cathedral Sudden Death

Another map that's taken full advantage of the particle system in 2.3 is pvk_cathedral. The new particles add a much better destructive feeling to the map as the supports and ceiling crashes down upon the players. Dust explodes into the air and small pieces of rubble can be seen falling to the ground.

Berserker Special

As we've discussed previously, the Berserker Special will be using color correction to turn the player's vision a bloody red. In the video you will get to see a quick demonstration of this, as well as some other effects like the blood that shows up on the Berserker's axe after use.

Facial Expressions

In our second video, we demonstrate some of the lip syncing added to the taunt system. You'll get a look at a few of the Captain taunts, as well as a few of the Berserker taunts. Take a look at the new fire effect for the powder keg while you're at it!

Indeed, I was pretty impressed with the particle effects, especially considering the lack of PhysX support in the "source" engine. The pvk_arena particle demonstration reminded me of a Warmonger level, and that's no easy feat. Keep up the good work! Unfortunate that there's no gibbing yet. :(

The lipsyncing looks pretty stiff, but the falling pillars in the cathedral was awe inspiring :)

i love this mod, and will definitely play the new version

Looks really good! My only complaint is that the facial animations look a bit stiff, now I know it is not an easy task to do but I think that if they'd move their mouths a lot more, make like, bigger expressions and have bigger mouths overall would help quite a bit. Also, their faces should move "along" with the mouth, the eyebrows and such add a lot to the emotion that is being expressed.

Pretty good job on the effects, I really like those.
But I wont lie and say the "facial" animations are pretty fail.
Tell your animator to "do" the lines in front of a mirror ... with the same intensity/volume as the characters ingame would perform them and then reference what he saw with the animations he does. It really helps :)
Like the others pointed out already, right now they're stiff and are barely moving their mouth .. as if they were wispering or something. Totally off :(
Anyways, looking forward to the next release :)

Have you ever seen a "realistic" facial expression in-game in any game out today? Sure cut scenes can get relatively perfect to mimic facial expressions, but when you make allegations that a MOD off of the hl2 engine isn't close to gaming's realistic standards, well then buddy you fail simply due to your stupidity and pulling words out your *** to try and prove a unnecessary point.

Remind me, its HL2 mod?
Do you know that HL2 got BEST facial animations on game market?
Nooooo?
Look at the TF2. Just join a server and spectate while watching at others faces. Or play L4D.
I agree that the fact they've added animations in PVK is great, but they certainly need improving.

We're expecting to make the expressions and the lip syncing more exaggerated, just wanted to get a preview out there of what we're working on.
