Actually they were painted black, and had red or white and pink or green lines around them, denoting if they were live (red) or training (white) and what type of explosive they used (I think Anatol was green, and was safe to use everywhere, but Amatol was red and it had a nasty tendency of going off unexpectedly in hot weather, hence they were never to be sent to the Dardanelles or Mesopotamia...)
