Here's the second part of the beta gameplay series, as I said before, we are committed to releasing a fun, balanced, and visually exciting game -- not just releasing pretty pictures each week.

Part 2

Oh just a note on flares: Players have infinite flares, however they can only drop 3 flares at a time. So if they throw a fourth flare, their first flare instantly burns out. Basically they are only useful for lighting your immediate area.

Yeah we are still trying to work out the details. But keep in mind, infinite flares don't block monsters from clawing your face, they just make it so that you don't have to run around in a pitch dark building all day with just a small circle of light.

I think they could really just be scattered everywhere, like ammo, but the player can only carry a limited amount of them..

It would create tension and a sense of rarity, just like for ammo. Is there something wrong with that?

I know it's not possible to do this in a good way with the Source Engine, but it would be cool if you could emulate bounced light, especially in small rooms. It's kind of funny to have a circle of bright light on the wall while the rest of the room stays pitch black. It would also help with the "not bright enough" flares, maybe.

Also, I know it's all in the name of realism, but the gun is held really high and it obstructs the players vision a bit too much in my humble opinion, to the extend that it might hurt gameplay...

They have Global Lighting in L4D for Flashlights, so I don't see why not.

And yes, there is something wrong with limiting guns. It's frustrating, not fun. Do you know how many times I've played ZP & ZP:S and everyone takes every gun, you're left with nothing, or a melee weapon? you're screwed!

You have 20 humans, and 5 guns, and 99 Zombies. NOT COOL. It's ANNOYING. The most played maps on ZP:S are all custom maps...which oddly enough, all have nearly unlimited guns & ammo. Seems people don't really like it^^

Yeah, for multiplayer I gotta say your statement is true...
Maybe it wasn't clear but is was mostly talking about limiting the amount of guns/ammo/flares a player can carry.
Not the amount that's available to everyone.

Keep in mind, players need to pay their upgrade points to use flares at all, so having them be very limited, or found, makes more of a skill system then an upgrade system, so that would be less realistic. "I can't use flare somehow without purchasing this card that says I can" Not very realistic...

Perhaps put NV Goggles in as a Upgrade like Flares ,make it like R2, you get them after-flares.

That'd be epic, way to many games totally ignore NV these days. Also, don't chime in on it's not realistic to have them; quite a few CODMW2 maniacs have them, quite a few gun nuts in general have em.

Also, you guys have a AK47 in the game, while common these days, no more common than Night Vision. Just make it a expensive upgrade.

Not really, and it is fairly realistic. I just wished they could push it more foward, but theres a Tonn of files to change then here. Reload, COmbat reload + empties from all positions, melees and so on.

I think flares should have maybe a "you can only have x amount of flares deployed at one time" so you need to be scarce and wait for the others to burn out before you can light more, or a cooldown time on flares, so that after using up certain quota you need to wait for them to recharge or something.

Infinite flares seems like a neccesity, but it should still have some restrictions. If Amnesia: The Dark Descent has taught us anything, its that having to decide between light and dark areas in a horror game adds to the atmosphere and terror like nothing else can.

Also, make the spread wider man, for both the Flashlight & flares. Nothing makes a game WORSE than being to dark to see anything. You need to have about L4D's level of Darkness, you can't see sometimes, but you can most of the time.

It's very frustrating not being able to see...NOT SCARY.

That's what flares are for, you can literally light up a room in seconds by throwing flares.

It didn't look like that in the video.

Do you have anywhere you can download these in 720p or 1080p, maybe in full screen I could tell.

Skip to 1:25 and you will first see me throw one flare (which almost matches the intensity of the flare you showed in the video) then I proceed to throw 2 more. In literally 4 seconds that entire room is completely lit.

Also you have to keep in mind that in reality, there is bounced light, color-bleeding, global illumination, etc which would help amplify the lighting without making the flare actually brighter which source just doesn't support.

It supports it, I've seen it in L4D & Alien Swarm.

And I was looking @ 1:25 to 1:50 and it was still way to dark. Needs to be at least 33% lighter.

Look at metro 2033's flashlight. They have a very wide "light cone" with really dim light at the edges. Wich is more realistic... the actual cone should be something like 180 degrees, but with really really dim light at the edges. If you look at a flaslight from the side its not like its pitch black until you get right in front of it! :D

Was actually wondering what the limit on flares would be. Personally I like the idea of having an infinite amount of them as long as they can't be spammed (maybe add a recharge time or something?) and don't offer too much light advantage (which you seem to have covered pretty well already).

I was thinking as I was watching...if I was on the Necro team, I'd go around the flares and use the dark corners and sides and strike him from his flank.

Although, if all the humans were together and all had x3 flares, they could just coat a room in light. Perhaps give only a team-leader flares; or as more humans join the team, have the game automatically adjust the flare amount per person, so if there's a small group of humans, they'd maybe only be able to have 1 flare of their own on the ground at a time.

Either of those suggestions would encourage sticking together and helping each other out, too.

I think there should be atleast a small animation for deploying flares, adding a little to realism and preventing spamming.

Or make them brighter but with longer animations.

That way it will pretty much be spam free and the limit can be enforced well.

Why not just have limits on flares, everyone starts with 3, and there are some scattered around in ammo boxes and randomly in the map, so it will be sensible and make people think before wasting flares. making them a valuable tool.

That is unless you are making a lot of dark areas in maps.

Plus flares and flashlight are pretty bright,

You all have to remember, these are like budget flares. what you gain in amount you lose in quality. personaly I think having better flares but not unlimited would be better, It would make you have to think about where you use them more and lead to overall better team gameplay.

now what I think would be awesome is if you COULD SEE your team-mate's flashlight-light, not that stupid cone thing source normaly has.

With anybody talking about the flares, here's my suggestion: Just make an upgrade that allows you to use military/police flares that are more brighter, last longer. If you can throw 3 flares at once, the third would be such one. That would not only mean to bring a player a light ugrade without taken everything scary out of the gameplay, but also force people to think about how they drop flares as the can't just decide what flare to spawn when.

the hud is still there...

why did the guy not attack when he was so near to you?

and once you looked up to a ventilator shaft, are these usable too?
hopefully, so that enemies don't have to go the frontal way each time

My only crit here would be the strange animation that the left hand does sometimes, it moves away from the gun, then comes back, and during that time it is flattened out.
Why does that happen? It looks really strange.
