I wonder though, do you guys have any intention of making the turrets animated? Or is this even possible with the Sin's engine?

And no, with the current engine its not possible to have animated turrets, but the new ships are designed with that in mind.

Not really. I am trying to keep both the polygon counts and particle counts within certain limits as not to bog down the engine - and although Xin ships tend to have a few more polygons than usual, due to the base racial stats (~1.8x attack/defense, 2x cost) you should never see too many of them in one battle.
