Survival 101 is a Half-life 2 mod that I've been working on for sometime now. The concept for the mod is that of survival/horror. It borrows elements from games such as Resident Evil and Bioshock. Major changes to the Half-Life 2 experience include: realistic weapon damage (no more emptying entire clips into enemies), scarcity of ammunition and health packs, and more of a focus on the horror aspect. The mod features its own story line which will hopefully span at least to the two hour mark.

The ideas like using toilet cleaner
and a bottle to build a small bomb
are great.
Plus, the menu background wallpaper
is just amazing!

But I've got 2 negatives:

1)The map Design. It looks and feels very
blocky. Try to use mapping with more models
and smaller brushes. The part of the level
where you have to run above the roof and run
against invisible player-blocking
walls are is horrible.

2)Your voice. You have a strong accent in your voice
which makes it very difficult to understand,
especially for people whose mother-tounge isn't english.
I died more often because I killed myself because of not
knowing what to do insteat of beeing killed by the zombies.
Try to speak more clearly or ask someone with a clear
voice to speak the lines for you. Or you could blend
in a small notice after each speaking scene with a
triggered game_text entity, its up to you.

Well you definitely have a point there. That first map was the first map I've ever made truthfully, and my voice actor is british. On MOST of the voice overs for 0.6 I added a game_text to go along with the trigger that set the sound off. Should have helped somewhat. But thanks for your opinion.

This mod does have a cool storyline to it, and the beginning was tense when the security guard said "Run they're coming back!". It gave me some awesome sort of an adrenaline rush.

The cons were the lack of detail, more props wouldn't hurt. Also yeah the make up of the map is somewhat blocky and too big for a survival mod. I need some close cramped in spaces to fend off zombies. The zombies also need to be well placed, and more npc noding, and hint noding would make them a lot more smarter rather than them just running at you. I was able to take out most zombies with a simple crowbar =/.

Though bottom line this is just the beta of the mod so theres no reason to give a low rating. I won't rate the mod until it is fully completed. But yeah the mod other than that was definitely great.

Thanks alot ghostkill. I know I definitely need to spruce things up in the detail department. This was just me screwing around one day and it kinda turned into something. The next release will definitely include more detail and the maps will be much more refined.

I'm downloading 0.6 now, but here are my thoughts so far on .5:

First of all, I love the background as well as the ambiance music in game. I also like the re-skinned combine soldiers. and the zombie rush at the beginning.

One thing I noticed is when you blow open the library doors, you can keep the npc alive, and get him all the way to the vent sequence in map3 (he picks up the spare crowbar too). A couple bugs I saw in .5 was when you load an autosave, sometimes you don't have weapons or the HEV suit.

A few suggestions is make the zombies a bit smarter and maybe a few more scripted events and tighter quarters to fight in. You could also make the flashlight last shorter, just to add to the suspense (which the darkness, ambiance, and zombie groans greatly fulfill) Finally, your voice is a bit rough in .5. I suggest adding an acoustic or a filter to make it sound more immersible.

Overall, I hope it turns out great, I am gonna play .6 now. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback sleepy. It's not actually my voice. I may have to get a new voice actor because he's british and I think alot of the American players are having a rough time hearing what he's saying. You'll see in 0.6 I've accompanied the voice with a game_text entity to tell you exactly where you need to go.
