Left 4 Dead Survival 101 demo map, beta 0.5
Feb 19, 2009 Demo 4 commentsLeft 4 Dead Survival 101 beta 0.5 demo map released!
Survival 101 is a Half-life 2 mod that I've been working on for sometime now. The concept for the mod is that of survival/horror. It borrows elements from games such as Resident Evil and Bioshock. Major changes to the Half-Life 2 experience include: Realistic weapon damage(No more emptying entire clips into enemies), Scarcity of ammunition and health packs, and more of a focus on the horror aspect. The mod features its own story line which will hopefully span at least to the two hour mark.

A 5-10 minute demo of the first map from the port of Survival 101 to Left 4 Dead has been released. You can check it out from our mod's download section or download it here, pcfpsreview.com/l4d_101school.rar
Due to the fact that some people seem to misunderstand the direction that Survival 101 is taking, I want to reiterate the fact that this is not a mod for Left 4 Dead. This is simply all of the existing Survival 101 maps being ported over so people that own Left 4 Dead will be able to play them as a full campaign. So it's basically just a map pack.
Stay tuned for the next release which will most likely be the second map with some major modifications and additions. Remember to leave feedback about your play experience so you can help us troubleshoot and get rid of all those nasty glitches.
Soon we will also release some screenshots and more information regarding the rest of the project.

Aw poo, I WAS making a mod called survival 101.
This is a decent mod but it still needs a LOT of work.
I loved this mod. The first half put me in total oh god zombies-are-eating-people-i-gotta-survive mode. I gotta admit, I tried building a couple of barricades before I remembered Half-Life 2 zombies bat stuff around. I was quickly smashed in the face by a flying box.
a lot of people have been complaining because they didn't think the mapping was very good. I thought it was fine. It did the job it was supposed to do; create setting and atmosphere. I actually loved the big three-layer foyerish area with the cafeteria on the bottom. I put on sv_infinite_aux 1 which made the game super fun. I didn't have to worry about the 15 second flashlight or running out of breath like a smoker carrying a heavy backpack.
I loved that the zombies and soldiers dropped after a few shots. It made me feel like the pistol was actually doing something.
I thought the music was really well placed, and it definitely bolstered the atmosphere even those most of them were the same tired HL songs I've heard a hundred times. The voice for the guy on the radio that tries to help you was really well done. I liked him and was secretly hoping I'd get to meet up with him and kick zombie ***. The crazy scientist's voice was...... uninspired.
Over all I thought it was fantastic. I loved the attempt at realism, and the simplicity of the story. Here's to hoping for a sequel.
I really liked this mod. I'd say the only real downside was that it was really short. The voice acting was actually very interesting, though some of the lines seemed a bit... cheesy? I'm not sure if that's the right word for the feeling that I'm trying to convey. Nonetheless, it was still good.
On a random note, I was able to enter the library without gathering the parts for the bomb by breaking one of the windows. That being said, I accidentally made the bomb and blew up the doors after already having entered the library. But that wasn't a good or bad thing, just random.
Agreed.
The mapping is average, the voice acting hard to hear, but dear GOD I ****** myself royally when I looked over my shoulder while running and saw that GINORMOUS horde of fast zombies. Nice work.
Waaayy too dark.
Unless flashlight has unlimited power, completely no-light maps are nothing but anoying. Yes, i know there were light some places (like 3 or 4) but not even quarter enough. Also all the ceiling was completely out of light, at you have fully relied on texture lighting, NOT GOOD!
At the first map you say "get back to the staircase" "What starcase?!"
Personal ratings:
Graphics - 4/10 - First map was butt-ugly, then it turned better over the next maps
Sound - 6/10 - Voice acting, yes, but not very believable.
Gameplay - 3/10 - Large groups of zombies and almost no weapons to find is not a good combination.
Lighting - 0/10 - It's basically missing...
Overall - 4/10 - Too many bugs and zombies.
Oh and by the way, isn't that the Resident Evil zombie hands on the background? Paint something, be original (please?).
This is just my opininon, you may judge me by it :)
sv_infinite_aux_power 1
dude. this was awsome, awsome music and voice acting, and unlike most mods short and to the point, ******* brilliant, loved the idea, voice acting, and the especially the part with the custom music. that was the most fun iv'e had in ages.
it may have been a simple mod with a few custom models here and there, but it was a GREAT simple mod. the story was a little too much like bioshock( and yet i still didn't expect certain things) but was overall very decent. the maps were lovely and the voice acting admirable. i applaude you and look forward to your next mod.
