the main issue is that technically, the only bombers used by the RA/NR were K-wings and captured TIE/Sa's. Y-wings and B-wings were considered Assault Fighters.
I view it like this
the K-wing is kinda like the B-17 Flying Fortress or the Avro Lancaster bomber. Good payloads, a decent amount of defensive firepower, and a good amount of armor, but slow and not maneuverable.
the B-wing is similar to the B-25 Mitchell. its faster than the K-wing/B-17, with less armaments and payload, and better maneuverability, and could be modified for use as a gunship with additional guns and some Air to Ground Rockets and a Cannon for added punch.
the Y-wing reminds me of the de Havilland Mosquito. Fast for a bomber, with a so-so armament, and a lighter payload, but it could get into places where the others couldn't get to.

Uh, I would switch the B and Y wings in that analogy. The Y-wing is infamous for being one of the slowest fighters in Star Wars. It is in no way used like a Mosquito. Further the Y-wing like the K-wing actually has a dedicated gunner, while the B-wing is a one man starfighter.

Since Y-wings have proton bombs like TIE Bombers, I fail to see how it doesn't qualify as a bomber if the TIE Bomber does.

there are conflicting pieces of information with the speed. I remember in X-wing Alliance that the speeds of the Y wing and B wing were 80 and 91 MGLT,

wookiepedia states that the A4 Y-wing has a speed of 70 MGLT, the "main page" for the Y-wing series gives a speed of 80 MGLT, and the B-wing has a speed of 91 MGLT

on the other hand, there is a chart on the Behind the Magic disk that has the speed of the Y-wing as 70, but the B-wing has a speed of 60 MGLT.

there was also a small reference sheet apparently used for the production of RotJ on the wookie page for MGLT that gives the speed of the Y-wing as 100 MGLT, and the B-wing as 75 MGLT.

The Behind the Magic figure is sorta supported by the wookie page for the B-wing/E, which gives the speed of the B-wing/E as 70 MGLT, and states that speed was improved upon from the original B-wing

as for the Proton Bomb part, it was stated that the Y-wing normally carried Proton Torpedoes, same as the X-wing and B-wing, albeit in greater numbers than in the X-wing. if I had to guess, probably to simplify logistics

I have never come across any information that has said the B-wing was ever faster than the Y-wing. If originally planned differently in RotJ, every video game and Expanded Universe work has consistently gone with the B-wing being faster and more modern. The Alliance Y-wing uses proton bombs here because it is the only Alliance Starfighter that has that ability, having it and the B-wing armed with torpedoes would be redundant.

well, you gave the tie defender as a special warlord ship
maybe the k-wing can be a new rep only ship
and on the roles thing I agree with GoaFan77

Description

Happy Friday everyone! I don't usually do previews for Starfighters, but I know there will likely be some confusion about the classic Y-wing, so may as well start now.

A dependable fighter bomber that saw service in the Clone Wars, the BLT Y-wing Starfighter was once called the workhorse of the Alliance fleet before the X-wing become ubiquitous after the Battle of Yavin. But it has now been many years since then, and the more modern B-wing has begun to take over many of the Y-wing's heavy assault missions. While it is among the slowest starfighters to be seen in the galaxy's battlegrounds, it makes up for it with unusually strong shields needed to well defended priority targets. The Y-wing can be outfitted with a variety of weapons, including a pair of laser cannons, twin linked ion cannons, proton bombs, concussion missiles or proton torpedoes.

The Y-wing configuration used by the Alliance primarily uses its Ion Cannons and Proton Bombs, to give it a distinct role from the B-wing; the Alliance's standard bomber. In this sense it acts a lot like the Empire's TIE Bomber (B), as an antimodule bomber that is effective at damaging space stations but much less effective against other ships. However, the Y-wings Ion Cannons actually deal bonus damage against support cruisers, making it a bit more flexible than the TIE Bomber (B).

You may also see Y-wings deployed from the recently revealed Atzerri Cartel and Pirate forces, which use it as a slower and less effective conventional bomber with concussion missiles. Also, for any Y-wing fans who are disappointed with the B-wing taking over its usual spot, I hope to add a rather unorthodox use for them which while mostly cosmetic, should help soften the blow.
