From the makers of Thrawn's Revenge: Imperial Civil War, Ascendancy is a Star Wars mod set after the Battle of Endor in the Star Wars Galaxy. Fight for galactic ascendancy as multiple factions from this period in Star Wars history.
One of two new New Republic cruisers in the upcoming version, the Dauntless fills a heavy cruiser role. It's less versatile than Assault Frigates, although it has more firepower.
Unlike with most content, you won't have to wait for the full 1.0 to play with this new toy. Sometime by August 8th we'll be posting this ship for download and use in 0.95 for our forum members:
You know, from this angle, it reminds me of a river boat with an extra long rudder.
I've never been able to work out what purpose such a rudder-like appendage would have for a starship. Unless the Sullustan's decided to defy convention and stick their observation deck out the bottom of the ship?
It could have possibly been where they stored some vital ship component(s), such as the sensors or the hpyerdrive systems. Maybe even the life support subsystems?
Wasn't that ship originally a luxury cruiser...? Maybe it's just for the looks, or some "sightseeing" thingies. Dunno why keep the "fin" when it was transformed into a warship but hey, majority of SW ship designs defy common sense ;)
I doubt it would house any vital systems - it's very exposed and an easy target, especially from the side. If there's any sense in the design at all the really vital system would be kept in safer parts of the ship.
That said, lots of Star Wars ships have their command centers sticking out practically waving 'Shoot me!' signs, so what would I know?
I always felt that the conning towers of the ISDs were a nod to the battleships/aircraft carriers of WW2.
The posibility is very high that it is used as an enhancer of the shieldtechnology they are using. Best Example were the Stardestroyers, whose shield-generators were also added outside the ship's mainbody. (I think you can see that in Episode 6 in the spacefight near the 2nd Deathstar)
Well, but we just don't know enough about their technology and culture. For all we know it could just be sth religious/cultural by the designer of the shiptype.
(Or just a sick joke..)
