Deus Ex is one of the best PC games in history, but even it isn't without its faults and shortcomings. Shifter addresses these and then some. Unused game content, buggy scripted events, several completely useless items, and certain design choices that can only be described as "annoying", all fixed (or at least "improved") by this little mod. I started Shifter in 2002 to fix just one of the latter -- the fact that weapons equipped with a laser sight won't turn it on automatically -- and the project has expanded exponentially since then. A few new weapons, some additional uses for existing items, new augmentations, and several fixes for existing Deus Ex bugs all exist in Shifter, along with a new multiplayer component. The mod is so popular it's been featured in Game Informer's July 2007 edition of Mod World; how many Deus Ex mods can say that? (only 3, to be specific) Shifter: "Removing the suck from Deus Ex" since 2002.

I was looking at my aug screen with synthetic heart on and thought it would be cool to have an extra 5th upgrade square (preferably of a different color, even just slightly different) show up for maxed level 4 augs that get the level 5 boost (I have yet to discover which ones don't). Having the aug icon light up a different color at level 5 for both the aug screen and main gameplay screen would be neat too, but that might be too overcomplicated to implement. Just having a 5th square would be rocking enough.

On a somewhat related note, it is currently difficult to tell if the Skull Gun gets a level 5 boost from synthetic heart, since the aug doesn't stay activated when used so you can't just check the aug screen for the current level like with any other aug. Maybe having the plasma burst show up a different color would be enough indication, or maybe that's changing things too far.

Now on a completely UNRELATED note, I like the ILAW. I like it a lot! So much so that I wish I knew modeling to give it a well-deserved unique model since the light rockets look a bit odd coming out the barrel of the assault shottie. I'll paypal a case of beer to anyone who comes up with a nice model for it. 8)
