Shattered Horizons is a team-based modification for Half-Life 2, based in a fantasy medieval setting. A meteor is rocketing towards the planet's surface, and the only hope is to teleport to safety. Each of the two team starts out with four Crystal Shards (used to power portals), and their ultimate goal is to get all (eight) of the shards into their base to activate their portal. Each player is only able to carry a single crystal at a time.
The teams are also equipped with an armory - it starts out with a few basic weapons (Short Bow, Dagger, etc) which players can choose from to spawn with. Players are restricted to certain types of items based on their classes: Fighter, Ranger, Thief or Sorceror. The items that players may spawn with is dependant on the amount of crystal shards in their portal, more crystals allows better items.
Weapons can be enchanted to one of three elements via magical shrines. These elements are Fire, Ice and Lightning. Elements affect the damage type of the weapon.
Players are also able to gain experience by fulfilling their classes' goals (such as killing opponents, returning a crystal shard to their base, or healing a teammate). The levels gained from experience supply the player with extra upgrades (3 to choose from per class) and health. A player's level also dictates how many items they may carry at a time.
Besides the regular game mode, there will be a secondary 'story mode', which portays the events after the impact of the meteor. In this mode, players must work together to defeat monsters and the very creature who summoned the original meteor...
The mod also sports various little quirks to keep the fun factor up - such as the Thief's grappling hook, and the Sorceror's transform spell. There is a good chance the mod will include monsters that can be killed for experience and items, and perhaps other minor game modes based around other factors. (eg: Survival mode vs monsters, or a grappling hook challenge map)
Initial Alpha Testing has begun, and so far everything seems to be running smoothly. No major problems have appeared, and only a few bugs have been found, none of them taking more than a few seconds to fix.
We finally have some screenshots to show! While we are quite aware it looks a bit silly to have a Counter-Strike terrorist running around in these fantasy environments, we hope you can see and understand the direction in which we are heading.
You can view our screenshots in our moddb gallery, here.
