A mod for "Star Wars: Empire At War - Forces Of Corruption" that seeks to change some fundamental aspects of how the game is played and introduces an alternate timeline to the Star Wars universe - all while attempting to retain the essence of the game loved by so many.

Report RSS The Return

Apparently I've decided to dust off my metaphorical keyboard and again sit at my literal keyboard with the goal of manipulating multiple human readable, pointy bracket and forward-slash heavy documents, in an attempt to manipulate the little squares of light on my monitor into making patterns I associate with ships and people and planets and lasers.

“When the nation is in its darkest peril, the great warrior-sailor Darakaer shall be summoned from his eternal sleep by a rhythm beaten on his ancient drum. For his final pledge was that he would come to our aid when the drum sounded, and that we should call him when we sailed to meet the foe.”

Irmenu folk legend.

Well, apparently someone has dragged my drum out of deep storage because, yesterday, I was suddenly overcome with the urge to return.

Of course, I’m ignoring the much more obvious (and likely) explanation that I’ve only just realised how much I’ve missed working on this mod.

But I much prefer the more poetic, tied-in-to-one-of-my-favourite-books reasoning, don’t you?

While I doubt that my return is going to have the same wow factor as that of Daala’s in Revelation, I am, at the very least, excited for the things that I have planned.

Or, more accurately, for how I’m going to go about them.

My time away has allowed me to reassess some things and, with the clarity that only ever seems to arise after the fact, I’ve realised how badly I went about things before, especially at the end.

I was jumping from one project to another; Campaign to Fighter Overhaul to Damage Overhaul to Fighters to Campaign to Damage to Fighters.......in hindsight, it was always going to end in failure.

With that in mind, I’m setting myself a to-do list that I will stick with:

  • Rebellion campaign.
  • Something else.
  • Empire campaign.
  • Something else.

As is always the case, I won’t be attaching any deadline to these steps; For one thing, I’ve been out of it so long that I’m going to spend a good deal of time reacquainting myself with what exactly I was up to.

I no longer have the means to work with ALO models unfortunately – As good as Windows 8.1 has been (really, unless you live in the Start Menu, it is a brilliant OS) to me, it won’t play nice with 3DS Max 9 – but I’m hoping that won’t be too much of a setback.

Before I go, a few final things:

  • It is quite humbling to see the interest people still have in the mod; It is still in the top 6000 of the ModDB overall rankings (Not bad with no updates in 10 months) and I still get a few e-mails and PMs from people asking about it. As much as I’m coming back for my own good, it is good to know that there is still an audience for my work.
  • Even better, I’m glad to see the game itself so alive and well. So many new mods and addons have come up since I last thought to check and the progress on many of the ‘older’ ones has been staggering. Looking at the quality and the scale of the work being put out by Jeroenimo, The_Farseer, the YVAW team and so many others, and the updates still coming for Thrawns Revenge et. al., I reckon the community is in terrific shape.
  • Having said that, apparently, FileFront is no more. While the site had been having issues for some time, it was still a fantastic repository of ‘stuff’ and this news is somewhat saddening. I, and I’m sure many others, released their first works there, and it was through there that I first became involved in the community.

Until the next update,

AUS_Doug.

Always you shall be in the front rank, a burning brand to your enemies, a brilliant fire to your friends. Yours is a restless life, and never shall you know peace, though you shall be blessed for the peace that you bring to others. Take comfort in the fact that, though you stand tall and alone, others take shelter in the shadow that you cast.

I didn't actually realise that until just after I posted, funnily enough!

It's cool how things work out like that.
