I´m a great fan of polycount (actually sort of a polygon-Nazi), so let me, please, give you an advice: such a model should/could have about 1-1,5k polygons (weapons included...).
It´s like you barely see fighters on the map, so everything round can be "rough", f.e. make tubes 6 sided instead of 18 sided, less sided spheres etc. Standard templates sometimes generate useless polygons on even/straight areas, so this should be avoided too.

Regards, Seregruth

Thanks for the advice, always nice to get feedback from those as well versed in these matters as you.

I'll spend a bit of time tomorrow with the optimize modifier.

Cheers,

Nice, though I always figured a Mon Cal fighter would be more almond shaped but meh, that's just me

I see where you're going with that; but this ship is mostly a result of doing some experimenting, with different shape modifiers, on a sphere.

Only later did I decide it was going to be anything.

Had I set out from the start with a Mon Cal fighter in mind, then I probably would've gone with an Almond-ish shape as well.

As an aside, do you pronounce it 'All-mond' or 'Are-mond'

I usually pronounce it All-mond. Anyhow, yeah the texture, weapons, cockpit and the side pods seem they would have looked better on an Almond shaped craft. Do you plan on including this in the distant future in the mod?

I do in fact; I've never liked the lack of fighter spawns on the Rebel ships, especially on ships like Home One.

Description

Been a while since the last pretty picture, so I thought I should post one.

This is the Fanon Mon Calamari Starfighter that I showed a (long) while ago.
But I've textured it this time.

In reality I just applied the textures from the Mon Cal cruiser, and UV mapped this to fit the texture.
(You weren't thinking I'd learnt how to draw were you?)

There will be some edits to this yet; I don't want it symmetrical for two reasons:

1) Mon Cal ships traditionally are not symmetrical.
2) The symmetry of this, coupled with the bump map, makes it look the ship has warts.

The biggest reason why this took so long was that 3DS Max was crashing every time I tried to export the model as an ALO.

For experimental purposes, I tried to export it as a 3DS, doing which gave me a clue as to why it was crashing; When exporting to 3DS format, it gave an error telling me that any one object can't have more than 64K faces.

So I separated the model into a couple of pieces (The missile launchers come in around 15K faces each) and Voilà it worked.
