Science and Industry 2 release their 1.0 public beta for the world to try. Briefcases at the ready, lets go knock out some scientists!

Rocket PistolYes, it's here at last. The beta version of Science and Industry 2 for Half-Life 2 is now available to download. Get your briefcases and rocket pistols ready, enjoy the new shrink rays and give this successor to one of HL1's biggest multiplayer mods a good run through. Servers are available worldwide.

Clarification: Some people seem to be expecting a full-blown version of the mod with everything in place. If you are, this isn't it. This is a beta version with most of the coding in place, but still distinctly lacking in polish. Look further than eye candy and enjoy the gameplay!

Compared to the first the mod looks and plays like complete crap. If you played the first and expected a good release look elsewhere or wait a bit for version 2.0 or something.

*Sigh* When will people learn that saying "It sucks" isn't helpful, and is really just plain rude.

If you want to provide negative feedback, do it in a constructive manner, i.e. exactly why you don't like it. Just being negative helps no one.

I'll certainly be giving this a try when I get home though :D

The first release of S&I wasn't pretty with sugar on top, either. Everything has to start off somewhere. Not every mod team wastes time on promotional polish to get some beta out to weed out the bugs in the gameplay.

This SI2 is good stuff.

Science and Industry was one of the first mods to introduce varying gameplay deathmatch in which the decisions made by team members change how the game is played, for instance if one team invests heavily in personal enhancements such as speed boosts the other team tends to not focus as much on high-accuracy ranged weapons and instead on spray-and-pray.

Hopefully S&I 2 will bring the same dynamics to HL2.

There's a lot of visual bugs, or things that aren't ready yet. All players have same models and weird animations, some textures are missing, nearly all weapons are CS ones, and the pistol that aren't from CS has missing textures. You should really name this alpha, because in it's state, it's hard to play. Still is awesome though, but you really need to fix some basic animations and playermodels and stuff. Looking forward to updates.

More like a pre-alpha.

Next time wait until you actually have a mod to release before hand.

What? What!? WHAT!?!? YAAAAY!

I have always wanted to try S&I ever since it was on PC magazine, but I didn't have HL, but after HL2 release the same magazine mentioned that S&I 2 was in production and then I got myself hyped again. I try this as soon as I will have time to download this.

How can you justify this as beta stage? This is a huge disappoint, please don't bother releasing content publicly, if it's hardly playable at all.

I loved S&I, but this is just... poor.

They have their priorities right, gameplay is almost fully implemented to what I remember from the first game, dont give them shit cause its not pretty, under the ugly, generic hl2 models is the gameplay i wish most mods today have : /

true but hl2 mod fans are so spoiled by the likes of insurgency that they want a complete polished gold full game on initial release. Even some of the staffers here are like that.
If they have a problem with the lack of graphics, then maybe they should STFU and help the mod get good graphics instead of working on some zombie or bullet terrorists or stupid civilian comics piece of crap and stop playing favorites.

A lot of people aren't familiar with the term "programmer art". :p

If you have a good base for sound and graphics, such as those from CS or HL2, it allows you to focus on code and gameplay first. It also allows you to study how assets are made and loaded into the engine.

There is no shame in doing this, and even professional studios such as Valve do it. Some of the videos I've seen for Left 4 Dead used sounds from CS, for example.

I don't currently have HL2 installed, but I'll have to try this out when I get a chance.

Yeah there's the problem, people want graphics

when Goldeneye Source was released (which had the worst gameplay ever, basically a very stripped hl2dm with just bullet sprayers and a whole load of copyright infringement) people praised that like a god.

But when you've got something that's mostly codework and hardly any new graphics, such as Science & Industry 2 it's a "NO IT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN RELEASED THIS SUCKS WORST MOD EVER."

It's an unrealistic vision but that's HL2's fanbase for you.
This release was a good decision. It is much better than the release of 'nothing' like most anticipated overhyped hl2 mods with simpler ideas.

Absolutely agreed, the expecations of the HL2 mod crowd have become completely unrealistic over recent years, which is a shame as some really great mods get shunned for no good reason.

I like many others love the idea that SI1 gets remade. And I don´t care for the graphics or models.
I´m not spoiled by good-looking mods either, it´s the fun a mod provides, not if the models look just like Angelina Jolie.
But I still agree that this thing doesn´t deserve the title ´beta´ just yet.
Some things for example, among others, that are lacking to be an enjoyable but not quite finished game (i.e. Beta):
- At least add a rough text what the researchable items do
- Add a text message when a research is finished, doesn´t have to be some fancy voice or anything, just plain text
- Let the radio play something, just anything, and if its static, it´s fine

Just adding this.
I just read on the Hp that the producer is "sorry for the misleading title", so my beef with that is already forgotten. :)

Keep going&keep up the good work, I can´t wait to get my hands on a new version of this in the near future *g*
