It had been a long day at work, working in the city always had that outcome. I boarded the train as normal, heading westbound, heading home, and exhausted from the day I fell asleep ... ... When I awoke I found myself in a place I had never heard of nor seen before; I was surrounded by a sense of fear as I brought myself to my feet from the station platform and made my way, through the Red Avenue.

Description

The first and for now only release of my prototype, Red Avenue. Much like other Source modifications, extract the folder into SourceMods and restart steam to play.

Okay, played the demo. Gotta say man, the levels were pretty well designed. There are a few criticisms I have though. Perhaps I missed some things, but I found a couple situations where the mod was basically impassable without using noclip. The first was the security room being locked with no way to be opened. Again, I might have missed something. Next, when you go down to the basement I kept dying in that long hallway and wasn't sure what was killing me. I tried jumping over the pipe with steam coming out of it next to the generator after turning that one valve. Was there a crowbar somewhere to break those boards? Continued...

So I had to noclip to even get to the end, which **spoiler I guess** made me jump as I wasn't expecting that noise. I can't really rate it anything as some parts were broken pending I hadn't made any mistakes. It shows promise however, there were some cool touches that shined through. Once more I did like the mapping, and those posters were funny but took away from the horror atmosphere. In short: it's a good start!

I think it was enjoyable.
The sound that came when you pressed the last button gave me creeps.

The ''quests'' were pretty hard, especially finding the battery and using it correctly... But, however the atmosphere was really great, and the awesome use of sounds gave me the creeps.

Okay disregard my above comments. I was wrong, it's not broken at all. Frankly, the solutions weren't obvious enough. I wasn't entirely sure that you would even need a key to open those doors. Perhaps a text like "I'll need a key" could pop up. Also, the key placement was rather obscure, but maybe if I knew I was looking for a key it wouldn't have been. The battery idea was pretty cool I thought, but with how the boards were nailed I thought I would need a crowbar or something. Maybe you could take one board in the middle off; an opening so you can easily throw it in there. And the battery itself, maybe you could have it sparking a little even before you pick it up. I had not idea until Pupkin commented that the battery even existed. That sound when you pressed the button was awesome, I don't know where you got it/how you made it, but it's scary as hell. I gave it a 9/10 because it shows a lot of promise. It would be a good idea to add a story and characters, that is if you want to continue working on it.

Not bad for a mod, but I got a few complaints.

I had no idea where the crap any of the keys where. Nor did I know you even NEEDED said keys. I assumed some button needed to be pressed. No, no you had to hide the things and let the player wander around till they either got lucky or quit out of frustration.

Also, I had no idea you where supposed to use the battery that way. The only way I knew of that was due to the above comments.

Good level design, but as far as the gameplay aspects of it, it was badly handled. Frighten the player, yes, hide the keys and never give them any idea what they are supposed to do, no.

Perhaps some inner monologues would do, or a random note to help clue us in. You hinted at what was near, but gave no indication that anything was even THERE. As a result, I was quite calm and altogether unimpressed. I mean, abandoned train station, but nothing to show anything had gone wrong means that I am relatively safe, which does not make for a horrifing atmosphere. Or even one that inflicts paranoia.

Add a few blood stains and some more sound events. Make us think something is coming for us. MAKE ME FRIGGIN PARANOID, THIS IS PERFECT FOR IT!!!

It was a good try, but could have been done better.
