Raven Rock is one of the more interesting colonies of the Empire within its province of Morrowind. Much has happened to this town in literally just a century, and many lives have been affected by the various events that striked the island of Solstheim as a whole. During my stay at the Drescher Lighthouse, as a guest of the East Empire Company and its administrator Rimyn Hartorius, I felt it necessary to describe its rich history within these volumes. During my research, that has spanned a total of three years in living in this multicultural town of dunmer, nords and imperials, I have managed to know quite a lot of people that call Raven Rock their home. I hope that my readers will appreciate the amount of insight provided within these volumes, because surely Raven Rock is the last bastion of civilized life on this island, which currently is an inhospitable and untamed land due to the frequent ash storms that devastated the southern part of the coast. Alas before exploring the vast wilderness, take your due time, traveller, to enjoy what this great city has to offer to its guests. The hospitality of the inhabitants is nigh unrivalled in other ports in the East. The security in the town is plentiful, with Councilor Morvayn’s redoran host acting in the upper district and through the barren wastes outside from the bay, while the town guard is managed by Commodore Audis Casietrius, the commander of the 3rd Eastern Patrol Flotilla of the Imperial Navy. The security is tight, and beware to the supporters of Kingslayer Ulfric Stormcloak from openly showing their support in the town, cause it’ll end them at the gallows.

The town was founded in 3£ 427 by the East Empire Trading Company in response to the discovery of a rich ebony mine on the western side of the island of Solstheim. The construction of the mine took several months, but engineers brought by the company from Wayrest employed an extraction method that was unprecedented for Morrowind as a whole. The Raven Rock mine was the first to use tracks within its shafts and wheeled wagons in order to reduce the strain on the prospectors, who just continuously hacked their pickaxes against the ebony ore veins. The mine yielded very great quantities of ebony ore, that was subsequently shipped to Windhelm. By 3£ 432, the town was home to thirty people, all of whom depended in a way or another on the mine for their livelihood. At this time, Raven Rock was almost exclusively inhabited by Imperials and a few Nords who were drawn to the mine’s wealth and to the wild nature of Solstheim itself. The typical architecture of the past were usually timbered houses, with a ground floor made by stone support walls and the rest built up by wood, from the nearby Hirstaang Forest. The town was still relatively small during the Third Era, and ships frequently ran aground on its shores due to the lack of proper guidance. During the winter seasons, the small lighthouse close to Fort Frostmoth was largely unserviceable due to the heavy wind and rough waves. Ships usually tended to navigate on the western side of the island in order to have a good bearing of approach towards the Raven Bay, but the many shoals that characterized the bathymetric profile of the coast made it so that many ships sank, sometimes with the loss of all hands.

Reborn Towns - Raven Rock Edition
Current Beta Status - 0.50B
(Worldspace & Navmesh)

One important aspect that I've dedicated to the mod is surely the level design, where I wanted to tie it in lore so that everything that is added has a sense. The lore has been built as the city was developed from scratch and upwards to its current status. The original lore regarding the town, as delivered in the Dragonborn DLC is no longer there, and a more expansive history is offered to the player in various books or as planned in the many quests that are to come. The overall vibe of the time wants to evoke something similar to Ebonheart back in TES III - Morrowind, where decades upon decades of Imperial and Dunmer co-existence led to an unique cultural aspect that is not to be ignored. Starting from the Oblivion Crysis and going onwards in time, we'll hear about a few famous people that lived, shaped, died or left Raven Rock.

The Harbour with Darius' Monument

SkyrimSE 2023 09 17 01 52 54 09

A monument dedicated to an Imperial Legion general from Morrowind that shaped and defended Raven Rock during its early settlement from raiders and bandits. A mother holding their weeping children is there to remember of all the fathers that lost their lives in the Bandit Wars of 3£ 319, and during the later Oblivion Crysis that struck Solstheim as a whole. The harbour itself, instead, is a fully serviceable port that offers many services, but the wealth of which depends on the two active mines of ebony and silver within Raven Rock.

Drescher Lighthouse & Bazaar

SkyrimSE 2023 09 17 01 52 54 091

Drescher Lighthouse, named after Drescher Ergalla. He was the son of a Censor from the Empire that lost his life in a shipwreck during his transfer from Seyda Neen to Raven Rock. In the years that followed Drescher shaped the town into what it is nowdays. In typical colonial style, the Lighthouse also serves as archives, where countless books, tomes and ledgers are kept, and where many of the intelectuals gather to read in the evening while shopping and eating at the Bazaar.

The Watering Hole

SkyrimSE 2023 09 17 01 52 54 092

A cheap bar where traders usually await the arrival back home of their trading vessels. The Bazaar is meant as a general roaming area where the player can trade with many merchant men that buy only select items, and while having less money than general stores in town. It is planned that East Empire Trading Company guards will keep security within the promenade of the Ligthouse itself. The Thieves Guild will have two planned side quests in Raven Rock where the player will be tasked in stealing something very important from within The Archives. But before hearing more of our planned stuff, lets grab a cup of mead and go forward!

The Earthquake of 4£ 5 - Ruins from the Past

SkyrimSE 2023 09 17 01 52 54 093

On the outskirts of Raven Rock, while going towards the small nordic hamlet outside the walls, one might see the buildings that belonged to the imperials during the Red Year, and which fell down in a massive earthquake that served as a prequel to the eruption that followed afterwards. A testimony of the devastating power of nature, but also as a testament to the willpower of the citizens of Raven Rock, that slowly rebuilt the town in the century that followed.

The Nibenay

SkyrimSE 2023 09 17 01 52 54 093 1

After the start of the Civil War in Skyrim, the Empire sent out one of their largest warships to reinforce Raven Rock, and defend from Stormcloak raiders that preyed upon the trading vessels of the East Empire Company. What would happen if Tullius tipped the sword in favour of the Empire while having such a great asset like the Imperial Navy close by a few nautical miles? One would blockade Windhelm in the last battle of the Civil War, and fight from a naval perspective, or if one might support Ulfric, Raven Rock would need to be rid by its Imperial Navy presence.
