Speedmodding is a competition where coders try and make a complete mod within a predefined boundary of time. Quake has a long and decorated history of speedmodding events of all sorts of types and lengths, and that tradition still lives.
Quake SpeedMod #01 was held by Harb on Inside3d.com and gamesnet #qc on the weekend of Friday 28th January to Saturday the 29th, 2005.
The modders were given a single primitive map with a set of unlabelled entities in it, and were told to create any mod they liked with the resources supplied.
The second catch is, all mods had to have the theme of 'QUAKE MODDING IN 1997'
Several varied mods were produced:
The Great Skirmish of 1997 by Cheapalert
Fight against monsters with new skins & sounds, with new weapons, in order to track down and kill the deadly STEVE before he launches the nuke!
Fighting Fish Frenzy! by The Harbinger Of Fish
Track down and kill all the deadly fish roaming the level with your trusty fish-killa gun.
MegaAwesomeSuperHyper Mod by MauveBib
"This is da MegaAwesomeSuperHyper Mod, or MASH for short. It is da best mod eva made for quak."
Every single impulse has been assigned to a function!
1997 Heaven by Wazat
In this mod the goal is to kill more monsters than other players. Bigger and more powerful monsters will give you more kills, but they also put up a better fight. Items and powerups are spawned randomly around the level, so keep moving to keep your ammo stores up.
Each weapon # ( 1-8 ) can be pressed 3 times to select 3 different cheesy newbie weapons.
NOTE : 1997 HEAVEN REQUIRES AN ENGINE THAT SUPPORTS .SCALE FOR FULL FUNCTIONALITY. IE: DARKPLACES
So that's the second SpeedModding event of 2005 done and dusted!
