Portal: Prelude: 15ᵗʰ Anniversary Edition, as its name states it, is an HD remaster and celebratory re-release of an unofficial prequel to the game Portal, adding a Portal 2-esque look to the scenario. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This along with Cave Johnson's fatal illness is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, but also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex, keep Cave alive and compete with Black Mesa's superiority. All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell...

Original Mod by the Portal: Prelude Team: Nicolas "NykO18" Grevet, Jérémy "Capitaine Mousse" Barbe, and Marc "Moroes" Bidoul.

Remaster by oyqea NtrTAYnMnT and the oyqea NtrTAYnMnT Source Development Center.

It's Not A Remake, It's A Remaster

So recently a Guest User on this site posted a comment that basically sums up this mod in a nutshell. However, most people might have overlooked this, so I'm going to post it again here:

"I really wish people would learn to read the description of a mod before they start b****ing and moaning about it. If you're looking for a complete ground-up remake with entirely different dialogue, easier puzzles and final boss, or even for it to be made in an entirely different engine, then this isn't what you're looking for at all.

New Fizzler

"It's not a rewrite that changes the dialogue, or a re-imagining that changes the story and puzzles, or a remake built in a completely different engine for a completely different game. It's JUST a visually and auditorily improved re-release of the original mod, meaning IT IS THE ORIGINAL MOD with aesthetic changes, I.E. better models, textures and audio.

"I'd love for a complete reimagining of Prelude to fix all the problems, subjective and objective, with the original. Hell, even a full-blown remake in Portal 2's engine would be cool, but that'd just be a completely new mod with the same name. Don't expect that from this, because there's no reason to."

If I Die Before You People Can Pour Me Into A Computer...

Now, too be fair, one thing is slightly changed in the remaster, and it has been done to make the story fit with in the canon timeline. And that is the inclusion of Cave Johnson, who, at the time in which this takes place, is dead. So he only appears as a framed picture on the wall. However, he is planned to make a physical appearance in a side story, that will be revealed in June.

Interestingly enough, when listening to the developer commentaries from the original, I learned that NykO18 originally though that Cave himself was the one who created the murals in the Rattmann Dens seen throughout the game, which he assumed from Valve's job opportunity article published at the time. Caroline is also now alluded to in the base game, and her shouts of protestation are heard at the start of the aforementioned side story.

Return Of The Hamster

On a lighter note, I have chosen three new songs by The Hamster Alliance to replace the songs from the base game. The original versions of Chambers 6, 8, and 19 all contained various music form the original base game, and while it is nice hearing Kelly Bailey's iconic soundtrack in the mod, I want the mod to stand on its own as an alternate version of the 2008 original. The songs I have added are "Making Contact," "Residual Simulation," and "What Could This Be?"

I chose his music as he had already composed songs for the original 2008 version of the mod. That, and his work seems to be greatly underappreciated as of now, so I thought I would revitalize interest in him.

Possible Ports

Finally, I would like to make it known that once the mod is completed, I will be porting it to Mac & Linux, and unofficially to Xbox and Playstation via mods The Orange Box and/or Portal: Still Alive. Some might even have exclusive content across each of the different versions.

Ask Me Anything!

If you have any questions about the mod, or if you have any suggestions for me, feel free to put them in the comments! I'm always open for questions. I would like to close by thanking you for reading. Stay tuned for the next update, coming June 10th.

While it is the mod's 15th anniversary, a remaster of the mod doesn't seem very necessary. With the game (portal) being released in 2007 and portal prelude being released in 2008, the authenticity should be left untouched. This comment is to not tell the creator/team to stop but to acknowledge the criticisms that are left in the comment section. More accurately calling this mod a "content replacement" is better than a "remaster". Until I see dramatic graphic improvements or what you all call it, "matches today's standards", it will deserve the remastered title it calls itself. Also, I advise you to ask for permission from the development team (or at least one of the creators) to modify and release the project. It just seems like an ethical thing to do since you're altering another's project who has put much time, money, and effort into something so big. Before making an argument try understanding where I am getting at.

also, the name of your development team is confusing
"oyqea NtrTAYnMnT"

Oh, I understand completely. To be completely honest, I'm glad that you brought this to my attention!

Also, the name is supposed to be a deliberate misspelling. At least, the "NtrTAYnMnT" part is. The "oyqea" part was a complete accident I made back in 2015.

two questions: how natural will the altered TTS lines sound? and would you consider making an optional addon for the mod with actual voice acting?

I would say, as natural as possible, and yes I would, post-release though.

Well, that does seem like somewhat of an interesting idea, altrough i don't like the general appeal of Portal 2's texture and models in Source 1, and especially in Portal 1. They just don't fit, in my opinion.

Still, wish you luck. Kind of sad that it's still a remaster and will not try to add some new areas or test chamber, but i guess you have to take what you can.

Edit: Honestly speaking, the new music you have chosen doesn't really fit nor in Portal 1's atmosphere, nor in Portal Prelude's. It's way too energetic and doesn't sound quite like ambient. (Speaking of Youtu.be this piece)

New areas... ...maybe not to the main campaign, but I am working on a side mode that takes place after! I should be able to throw something together.

Well, I'll keep your feedback in mind, but at this stage I probably won't change anything. The first two are mostly user to get the tension high, and the third one serves as the send-off to the main testing portion.
