Portal: Prelude: 15ᵗʰ Anniversary Edition, as its name states it, is an HD remaster and celebratory re-release of an unofficial prequel to the game Portal, adding a Portal 2-esque look to the scenario. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This along with Cave Johnson's fatal illness is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, but also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex, keep Cave alive and compete with Black Mesa's superiority. All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell...

Original Mod by the Portal: Prelude Team: Nicolas "NykO18" Grevet, Jérémy "Capitaine Mousse" Barbe, and Marc "Moroes" Bidoul.

Remaster by oyqea NtrTAYnMnT and the oyqea NtrTAYnMnT Source Development Center.

Not A ReMAKE, A ReMASTER

So recently a Guest User on this site posted a comment that basically sums up this mod in a nutshell. However, most people might have overlooked this, so I'm going to post it again here:

"I really wish people would learn to read the description of a mod before they start b****ing and moaning about it. If you're looking for a complete ground-up remake with entirely different dialogue, easier puzzles and final boss, or even for it to be made in an entirely different engine, then this isn't what you're looking for at all.

disclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimer

"It's not a rewrite that changes the dialogue, or a re-imagining that changes the story and puzzles, or a remake built in a completely different engine for a completely different game. It's JUST a visually and auditorily improved re-release of the original mod, meaning IT IS THE ORIGINAL MOD with aesthetic changes, I.E. better models, textures and audio.

"I'd love for a complete reimagining of Prelude to fix all the problems, subjective and objective, with the original. Hell, even a full-blown remake in Portal 2's engine would be cool, but that'd just be a completely new mod with the same name. Don't expect that from this, because there's no reason to."

If I Die Before You People Can Pour Me Into A Computer...

Now granted, one thing is slightly changed/alluded to in the remake, and it has been done to make the story fit with in the canon.

cave

And that is the inclusion of Cave Johnson, who, at the time in which this takes place, is dead. So he only appears as a framed picture on the wall. However, he will make a PHYSICAL appearance in a side story that will be revealed in due time.

Return Of The Hamster

On a lighter note, I have chosen three new songs by The Hamster Alliance to replace the songs from the base game. These are "Making Contact," "Residual Simulation," and "What Could This Be?"

thehamsteralliance

I chose his music as he had already composed songs for the original 2008 version of the mod. That, and his work seems to be greatly unappreciated as of now, so I thought I would revitalize his work.

Have You Seen This Chicken?

Sadly, all good news must end at some point. For some reason I'm having difficulties with map editing. Does anyone know about the model: button_bot_reference.mdl?

Possible Ports

Also, I would like to make it known that once the mod is completed, I will be porting it to Mac & Linux, and unofficially to Xbox and Playstation via The Orange Box and/or Portal: Still Alive. Some might even have exclusive content across each of the different versions.

Ask Me Anything!

If you have any questions about the mod, or if you have any suggestions for me, feel free to put them in the comments!

I really wish people would learn to read the description of a mod before they start bitching and moaning about it. Update 2: a note on voices.

So I would post this as an article, but it mandates that I have at least a couple images to do so. So I’ll be posting this update as a comment on the main thread. Anyways I wanted to talk about the voices that will be used for the characters in the mod. Mike, Erik and Peter will all retain their voices from the base game, but every other scientist will be completely re-voiced. The intercom announcer who is present for only a few voice lines in the game will be replaced by the Portal 2 announcer using uberduck.ai. As for GLaDOS, The alpha build I released had the lines done by 15.ai, and I intend to do so in the final release, too, albeit with one of the newer models. And, yes, I know they updated their terms and conditions saying that you can’t use 15.ai with other text to speech voices, due to confusion for “less sophisticated“ and “less advanced“ text to speech programs, but I don’t care. I’ve started off this mod by mixing text to speech voices and I don’t intend to stop. I’m not going to go change what I already have so far just to appease the creator of 15.ai, with the possible exception of if he contacts me directly. Plus, I blatantly listed out what each voice is going to be done by, so it will be easy to discern what text to speech voices were used for what. Also mapping is coming along nicely too (not really).

will this have a large amount of differences to the original mod? mostly towards stuff like dialogue and puzzle design, as imo they don't really hold up too well

personal list of improvements i think could be made:
- change the dialogue to be less gross
- rework the puzzles to not be total ******** in some areas
- not be on the portal 1 engine
- not use text to speech for all the voice acting
- just rework the mod completely to be up to todays standards

- change the dialogue to be less gross: Oh, you mean the perverted comments. I'd love to, but when you remove those, the dialogue gets really boring all of a sudden.

- rework the puzzles to not be total ******** in some areas: You're going to have to be more specific.

- not be on the portal 1 engine: Nice try, but the citizen and manhack npcs do not exist on that version of the Source engine, so that is therefore impossible.

- not use text to speech for all the voice acting: No. Part of this remaster is to stay as true to the original as possible. Only the characters that have the same voice as another character will be changed and actually voices.

- just rework the mod completely to be up to todays standards: I'll try, but I can't appease everyone.

- the perverted comments do not fit in a game like portal, and should definitely be removed. if the dialogue is boring because of its removal, the dialogue should be rewritten as well. if sexism and perversion are the only things making a piece of text entertaining, the piece of text should simply just be completely thrown out. i get that mike and erik are supposed to be complete ********, but the things originally written for them, while seen as funny back in 2008, are completely unacceptable nowadays, and not to remove them would be a really short-sighted move on your part.

- the difficulty can spike insanely quickly, to the point of being sadistic at times. overuse of moving walls, turrets, insanely strict timers, glados' fight, etc. i get that glados' fight is supposed to be hard as hell, but it just goes too far.

- using the portal 1 engine seems quite counterintuitive to the whole remastering thing. using the same engine as the original, where there's already a much improved engine available just seems pointless. plus, p2:ce is coming out fairly soon, so why not wait for that?

- if what you mean is that every scientist besides erik, mike and peter will be voiced by real people, that would be a terrible idea. it would make the three stick out like a sore thumb. granted, they are meant to be prominent characters, but still.

- the mod is insanely flawed, always has been, so good luck with that.

Okay, so now I need to address these in more depth, which sucks, because I hate writing in the first person. In any case, the TTS for Erik, Mike, and Peter, while remaining the same, will have slight editing applied to make their dialogue sound more natural, to make it blend with the revoiced characters.

Also, while the mod is insanely flawed and the difficulty spike is enormous, I personally think that was intentional, as most people would have played Portal before Portal: Prelude. Although I will admit, 2D test chambers translated into a three-dimensional space do not work that well.

Returning back to dialogue, as I stated in my last reply, I'd love to remove the perversion and/or homicidal tendencies of the scientists, but when you remove those, the dialogue gets really boring all of a sudden. Also, I think it suits the game well for the year in which it takes place, that being 2001. That, and Aperture is "just slightly" more reckless than Black Mesa, and are also trying to beat them for funding. So you can imagine that in their rush to beat Black Mesa that they would need some type of a mental release.

Finally, the game engine. Let's talk about remasters for a second. As I, and one other have stated many times, "It's not a rewrite that changes the dialogue, or a re-imagining that changes the story and puzzles, or a remake built in a completely different engine for a completely different game. It's JUST a visually and auditorily improved re-release of the original mod, meaning IT IS THE ORIGINAL MOD with aesthetic changes, I.E. better models, textures and audio." Plus, as I stated, the human NPCs left over from Half-Life 2 that are present in Portal, are NOT present in its sequel, or its upcoming Community Edition. Remember that while Portal Stories: Mel had human characters in the background of the first chapter, you NEVER directly interact with them, and with good reason, as they are actually just dynamic props with an animation sequence tied to them.

Anyways, I'm going to get a coffee.

With all due respect, I don't see the point of remaking Prelude in the Portal 1 engine, since it's already in that engine in the first place.

Wouldn't it make more sense to remake it in Portal 2's engine, to take advantage of all the quality of life improvements, improved visuals, etc?

It appears I need to tell you the difference between a reMAKE and a reMASTER.

A remake is taking something and rebuilding it entirely from scratch.

A remaster is taking something that exists and only improving the sound and the visual quality.

Portal Prelude: 15th Anniversary Edition is a remaster, not a remake.

Well in that case the question is, what's the point of reMASTERing Prelude if it's gonna be in the exact same engine?
