MERP is a total conversion modification of the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Explore Middle-earth in a fully open-ended environment like you've never seen before. Play races like Elves, Men, Hobbits and Dwarves and take part in the War of the Ring.
2012 will be the Golden Age of MERP!
The heightmap of MERP for Skyrim is made by Maegfaer!
Enjoy ;)
Make sure you view it full-screen ;)
lookin guud ;D
Notice the smaller mountains specifically, I focussed mainly on better proportions and more accuracy compared to official Middle Earth maps. This map will feel very different ingame. It will feel a lot more roomy, with a lot more open space.
This is especially obvious if you compare Rohan between our Oblivion map and our Skyrim map. Mountains will not be low btw, the highest mountains are still twice as high as Skyrim's highest mountain (Throat of the World).
say hewhaaaaaaat.
I must say that I'm mighty amazed by the talents you guys are showing, take your time to perfect this jewel :D
Looks great! Will you guys be recruiting new landscapers once the Skyrim CK has been released?
Yes, but we will be quite picky, so make sure you're good! :D
What about lumpypat? Isn't he interested?
lumpypat is part of our team?
oh nvm; i got confused between landscaper and landmass generator, hehe.
Christ Almighty this will be huge.
When you guys have to populate the map... I don't envy you. :D
It won't be so bad, most areas of of Middle Earth are quite deserted and full of wilderness (landscape we mostly generate). Our content will be more sparse than Skyrim's, where you stumble over a quest every 2 meters.
But surely you will have custom "Random Encounters", right?
yeah ;)
thats a good thing :D i really can't folow the quests I get. every time I finish 1 i already have 4 others starting...
I thought in previous comments I saw, that it wasn't possible to make the map any bigger than the current map, but it seems you have made it massively bigger?
Some corrections in calculations and estimates showed us that this is about the maximum size of a map for a 32-bit based Elder Scrolls game, without a big risk of running into RAM limitations in the later stages of development.
If said comments were older than say, about 2 years ago... Then we just didn't have enough experience yet to make such a firm statement. We couldn't manage to get a bigger map back then, and no other modding team ever did before (for TES games). It's all about finding the right tools and methods.
Awesome, can't wait for this to be released, and my exploration of Middle Earth to begin
Huh?
why is the elderscolls in an middle earth project?
Its just a comparison of size with other worldspaces made in TES engines. MERP is an Oblivion (and soon a Skyrim) mod remember.
It is a heightmap comparison that shows the size differences. Don't worry, Tamriel won't be in MERP ;)
We'll KILL TAMRIEL!! Completely!! We are the real Alduin, and you can't stop us! Mundus will be devoured and a new Universe will be created in the Void, and it will contain what is called Arda! (Well, Middle Earth only really, but it's still 10 times bigger than Skyrim or Cyrodiil).
hehe or id go into Mehrune Dagon's plane and release oblivion on upon the elves and edain in all of middle earth!
Illuvatar forbid! That seems... extreme.
"2012 will be the golden age of Merp"
Are you planning a beta release this year?
We don't wanna say for sure since we don't know how fast work will progress, but we're surely starting strong ;)
who needs quests, im probably just gonna end up walking around and nothing else
mind = blown
Awesome!
One of the few mods I'm actually excited about. It won't be bad to wait this because I know what's the possible outcome. Middle Earth in Skyrim would be just epic, nothing less. Even without a game you can actually play I'd be still satisfied with walking around this map.
Insane! MERP based on Skyrim's techniques will be badass, good luck with it!! :D
Holy sh... damn! That's huge!
It's going to be huge. O.O Jaw = dropped.
GODS BE GOOD! THIS IS THE BEST MOD EVER TO HAVE BEEN MADE!!!
How many people made the new Skyrim map? How long did they work on it? It looks so huge! My guess is 1.5 years :D
What are the dimensions of the grid? I count the squares and it gaves me 12 * Cyrodiil = Skyrim MERP !! Awesowe! :D
I made it on my own, although several team members often gave tips about looks of certain features. I started 3-4 months ago I think, but ofcourse didn't work every day on it. I have no idea about the total amount of hours, but 100-130 hours is my best guess. It was made with L3DT, I first generated the overall elevations and mountain ranges, and then spent a lot of time hand editing everything.
how awesome would it be to walk in merp with virtual reality glasses :O, don't think i won't come out for few weeks but with virtual reality glasses, omg, i'll start living in merp xD
Can you make it Bigger still? :) Ok now seriously. I guess the more you find out about Skyrim's engine, the more you might want to expand it. Will that be something plausible if the project is half or eve 90% done? To expand the map even more without taking a major hit on the development schedule?
You mean the scale? Or adding regions? Adding regions can be done at any time. Upping the scale would destroy the work done. So, no, once started, we will not increase the scale. And as I have explored that heightmap myself, I can honestly say it doesn't need to be any bigger. Very few areas are cramped.
Yeah, I meant scalewise. Is nice to know that it's been developed with such care.
I am guessing it would take about 3-4 hours to walk from one side of the map to the other? Perhaps double if you take on account the mountains?
Amazing! (:
Seriously amazing guys... keep up the great work!
You guys rock, thanks for your hard work, this is absolutely stunning ! I can't wait to hear news from you about what progress you're doing, but I'll definitely wait all the time you need to finish this masterpiece ! Keep it up !

What does the green square on the middle earth skyrim map represent?
