Description

First release of psychological HL2 mod, 'Mentality'. Please note that this is not polished by any stretch, nor optimised heavily, but we wanted to give you all a chance to play this short demo. Please read 'Readme.txt' in RAR archive for help. Please also note that to play this you will need the contents of Orangebox installed, that is HL2, Episode 1 and Episode 2. Be sure to tell us what bugs are encountered, we know there are plenty. We hope you have fun playing =)

Downloaded.

You forgot to remove the .svn folders, when you want to release your mod, don't just copy and paste the root folder, export it ; if you're using TortoiseSVN : Right-Click->TortoiseSVN->Export.
You also forgot to remove the mapsrc folders, and there is .vmf files in it... (WTF ?)

So, let's test this alpha.

This mod may work without episode 1, it hasn't been tested. Episode 2 is essential though.

yeah i downloaded it and all i got is a shity word document so i moved it into source mod then resarted steam and it wasnt there so mabye u should make an installer instead of a fucking word document

Maybe if you learned some 'fucking' manners we would feel more inclined to make an installer rather then a 'shitty' word document. Perhaps you didn't do it right. It's worked for about 1,000 other people.

it's amazing. surpassed my expectations, especially for an alpha of a demo.

seems, i cant edit my comment, oh well. i have a few things to add:
there seems to be a missing texture on the sniper?
when i zoom in with the sniper, it just is really... weird. i am on a 1440 x 900 resolution, i think the problems related to that
and no hit box for the head?

pancreas Oct 14 2008, 8:36pm replied:

I think the missing texture is of the hand, do you see it when you look up? Also I'd say its not because of your resolution because thats what im running and ive been fine through th development process.

PoisonedV Oct 14 2008, 8:40pm replied:

Yeah, it's only when I look up. Also, I don't know what was wrong with the sniper, but when I went to zoom in, the crosshair was about half the screen, on the left side, and didnt represent where it would shoot at all.

Ah damn, yeah were were experiencing stuff like that a while ago, it had since been fixed but it pops up from time to time on other peoples computers, its weird, ill see if we can work out a solution for ya.

cgSprite Oct 14 2008, 9:58pm replied:

Yeah, that is because at this point we only have one version of the zoom overlay texture, we are working on getting multiple ones fixed up. The sniper rifles hand just needs to be re-exported and compiled again.

Hey, signed up here just to encourage you to keep up the good work. I was expecting a bit more mindfuck stuff in here, but despite the lack of that it felt like a really solid shooter with cool weapons and really interesting map design (despite those ERROR boxes :P). Flashlight seems to be extra-weak, but that's good imho - adds to the atmosphere so for example in the end I was quite happy to reach places with more lightning. Also difficulty seems to be what it's actually supposed to be. Being used to HL2, I chose Hard dif and then, in the first room with more than 1 zombie, I had to bring it down a notch after dieing quite pathetically. Which is really good. Adds to the fear. :)

Anyway, after arriving at the conclusion that I quite like it despite no big mindfuck, (spoiler time) the room changed, zombies attacked and the voice kept calling "come in! are you there?" or smth which imho was quite a damn neat touch which only left me craving for more after the oh-how-repulsively-soon ending message. :( So yeah, it was a bit FEARish, but this is only the start and hopefully there will be richer variety of mind deterioration in the full game. :) So cheers, can't wait.

Reconunit415 Dec 8 2008, 6:12pm says:

This game resembles FEAR alot, but that's good. I love the demo, the weapons are solid, the first person part of it is really convincing with the head bob when you sprint (as opposed to most of the Source games where your screen stays where you put it).

I like the recoil style. It stays where you aim it but it just spreads instead of pulling your entire screen upward (speaking of the assault rifle). The weapons are some of the best designed I've seen in a Source mod. Just the basic mechanics of the game are great! All you need is one of two more weapons, and the rest of the maps, and you have just created the best horror mod for the Source engine.

My only con here (since it's an alpha) is the voice work. A good voice actor would make it all the more believable.

As a last statement, I would like to also congratulate on the best lighting I've ever seen for the Source engine

Dude, this is very good. This kept me scared throughout. Definitely the best mod I have played. Can't wait for the full thing. Also, the only problem I experienced was when I zoomed in. The sight was like way to the right and I couldn't aim while zoomed in.

Gave the Alpha a whirl, really good work for an alpha!

It had an eerie feel, the guns felt solid and the creatures were creepy, unfortunately the mod crashed when I reached the first encounter with the armed soldier folk.

Bug's:
Some of the glow sticks don't emit light properly.
Bullet hole decals don't show up on living enemies.
Rather bad FPS hit when looking in certain directions (level optimizations and maybe cutting the levels into smaller parts could fix this)
Tripwires not working properly sometimes.

Pro's:
Great atmosphere
Excellent voiceacting
inventive weapon(s)
Good textures and models

Con's:
The levels are rather empty, getting some more props and debris in should solve this, although it might hit the fps badly, but this could be solved by splitting the one level into several more.
Custom animations, I'm not sure if the current ones are placeholders only ,but getting some custom animations in will definitively remove the half life ness of the mod.
Tweaking the run animation a bit, it's a little to strong and starts out slowly, look at the one in CoD 4 and compare.

Suggestions:
I found myself pushing larger physics objects infront of entrances and doors to block out enemies and stand on, maybe this could be explored on further with a drag function?
More ambient sound, it really adds tensity to the game when you hear things like people walking above you, wind, creaks and the like.
More level clutter( as mentioned)

That's all I have for now, good luck! I liked what I played and I'm looking forward to future releases :)

Sounds like a steam content problem. Some of the data comes from Half Life 2: Ep 1 and Ep2, so you need to have those games installed to see all the bits and pieces, I think.

Scorch6679 Jun 30 2009, 8:14pm says:

It's nice, it's got realism but makes it fun when you get used to some gun mechanics. I realize this is a demo why some weapons have no explanation or any practical (apparent) use. [SPOILARS!] GRAPPLING HOOK COUGH.
It didn't really have me scared after I was introduced to the infected npcs. but the end part where the enviroment changes is meant to cause confusion. but those armored troopers just shot out of nowhere after I took the battery to see what it does.
which kind of annoyed me :/ give them a reason to shoot at you for that. level design has a good theme and finished feeling. from what I've seen, as VALVe says give the player a reason for being there.
but it's nice to see a source modification with different weapons, enemies, and story/scenery.
and I'm just starting to get more into this "psychological" thing :)
I realize this IS a demo again, nice work hope further versions can introduce a lot more custom content!
