Gearbox Announces Homeworld, Homeworld 2 HD Remakes !

Posted by on

During a panel at PAX Australia today, Gearbox announced upcoming HD remakes of Homeworld and Homeworld 2.

In addition, the studio will make original, unaltered versions of both games available digitally. No specific pricing or release date for either the HD versions or the unaltered versions has been announced, but Gearbox head Randy Pitchford noted that a “small team” is currently hard at work on the projects at Gearbox. Gearbox acquired the rights to Homeworld back in April from THQ.
At the time, Gearbox chief creative officer Brian Martel said the studio plans “to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games.”

CEO Randy Pitchford announced that the successful acquisition of the licence from the now defunct THQ was the only bid made for the franchise by a developer during the process, with the other two competing offers made by unnamed game publishers. Therefore the studio will bring both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to Steam, and while the team is working to update the graphics for a more modern look, those who purchase the game will also receive classic, unaltered versions of the 1999 and 2003 games.
No release dates were confirmed. In April this year a Kickstarter campaign to create Homeworld 3 was unsuccessful after developer TeamPixel was unable to secure the game’s rights.

We do not know if the whole game engine is subject to change. However we can expect Gearbox to change both models and textures for their HD Remake.

Sweet, I can't wait. Gearbox can't mess this up since they're not allowed to edit anything from the game since it a HD remake and not a reboot so im looking forward to this.

they should really optimize the engine so modders have more head room to work with. (e.g. larger poly count limits, much larger texture sizes and the such)

You know, this is going to be awesome. The team they got on deck for this are probably Homeworld players themselves. :D

I would be excited, if it wasn't Gearbox who announced this...

For now, only Homeworld & Homeworld2 are going to have their own HD Remakes. Cataclysm is not, actually, concerned.

Hm... in one Polish site I've found information about Cataclysm. Probably Gearbox haven't rights to this game, because Homeworld: cataclysm was bought by Rockstar Games( Barking Dog Studios). But nothing sure.

This awesome but I would expect so seeing how much gear box paid for it in competition to other companies. Homeworld was game of the year anyways and one of the great classics

Honestly I hope its more than a HD remake. As amazing as homeworld is their engine is now dated. The new engines are far more amazing and world be awesome if incorperated. Look at crytek and starcitizen the engine handles the 3d space aspect well. Distructible damage so you can see holes form in ships and destory engines completelu so the ship is dead in space and will need a repair vessel to come for it. And like others said poloy count. Also better texture poloys lense flares explosions etc

I know gearbox doesnt have the best rep but some of their games are good. And when you think about it no matter what company we can all complain lets just hope theu use how much money they invested on this game to make it amazing not just a plain reboot

It's not a "reboot". It means that they won't change any engine/scripting part.
