The water looks very good actually! Also, nice work on the general pool area.

I know Mafia had a sea/river area, but how did that work? Was it just a flat, blue textured surface? I can't quite remember.

It was :P Despite me loving the game, I think the water in the vanilla game was quite awful. It was indeed a planar surface with an animated texture onto it that hadn't much resolution either. If only as much as your toe touched the water, you would drown :P

Mobsters' highest fear after taxes: water.

Hitman: Codename 47 was released 2 years prior to Mafia, and I recall that it had quite some nice water effects. Maybe you could reverse-engineer that game (or any other game of that era) to see how they did it? Also, a coder could really help you on that matter.

Someone named MR F actually once made a watershader mod for Mafia, which used DX9 normal maps. It looked really impressive. I tried to implement it into this mod, but there were 2 problems, first, it couldn't be animated in such way as if the ship was moving without making Lost Heaven set sail as well, and it required a mirrored object to serve as the reflection, which is not possible when the water is meant to be transparent like in the pool.

The water looked nice enough, it doesn't need more in my opinion because it is such a old game which it runs on and the textures are overall not that great as they are these days.

I did wonder though, the small stairs in to the water had a small carpet on it, was that in real also the case? Because it looked to me rather odd, but, not that much that it is a problem, lol.

I LOVED the detailed shower in the video, were there is a metal railing of some sort around the figure who takes the shower. I can understand why they made it like that, so the figure wouldn't slip that easely in the shower.

As always MrRobville, very well done!

Leon

There actually was a wooden cover on the stairs :P Quite odd in my opinion, considering wood can be far more slippery than tiles, but it's not the first time Titanic's design has surprised me. When you lookup photo's you'll see a dark material covers the stairs. The Ship Magnificent books speak of a wooden step cover as well.

The showers are quite cool indeed, and not what I had imagined before I saw a photo of it, as it looks more like some sort of an electrocution chamber. But it was indeed pretty much a tall railing surrounding the occupant for the reason you've mentioned.

By the way, notice how Tommy is slamming his head into pretty much everything above him such as the booth's doorway. This may seem like a scaling glitch and confused me greatly in the past. But Tommy's ingame height is 186cm, which is way taller than what the average height was around 1912. So in the old black and white photo's, areas appear much bigger than they actually were. Being 196cm myself I was confronted by this when visiting the Nomadic and another old steamer in Belfast. I could easily touch the ceiling, and slammed my head into a doorway twice. So if I were to visit the Titanic, had it still existed, I would need to have proper health insurance first, and wear a helmet.

So true, people were much smaller many years ago. Not sure though if they were that much smaller in 1912, but i guess its a combination of that and that a lot of old ships have low ceilings. By the way, 196cm! I thought i was tall with my 187 cm, lol!

greetings,

Leon

It's sometimes handy when trying to reach something from a top shelf for someone else in a store, or when trying to look past a crowd in Asia. Other than that, beds are too small, clothes are usually not in proportion, mirrors hang too low... no scratch that, everything hangs too low, I can't fit in many cars properly and Economy Class onboard an aircraft can be used as a torture device against me. Oh did I mention I've slammed my head in a doorway a couple of times? :P

Not sure what the exact average size was back in 1912, but this photo shows it wasn't that much :P : S-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com

Description

While the poll is going on, let's go back to another development update. I had to show this one as a video, as it is about the pool area. Despite Mafia's limitations, I managed to create something that kind of looks like volumetric water. Using a couple alpha maps for the surface and a fog effect for the submerged area. I think it looks quite decent. Now I only need to find a way to make act like water. But even if I can't, this is better than drowning in a 6 feet deep puddle. ;)
