Killing Floor is a survival horror total conversion set in London, England. In a laboratory under the city, a series of human experiments in cloning and biological augmentation are being conducted by the employees of "Horizon". Horizon is a BioTech corporation formerly employed by the government to do the R&D on a top secret series of synthetic combat drugs which would enhance the effectiveness of soldiers in the field. Horizon's funding was cut, when their practices were deemed too immoral even for such a controversial project, but the research didn't stop. Funded by private money from the deep pockets of Horizon chairman and research scientist Kevin Clamely, tests continued in a more...private location. That was until something went wrong. There were reports that the lab had been comprimised; that the subjects were behaving abnormally...then, silence. Several days later, twisted shapes began to emerge from the confines of the lab into the city above.

yeah, i'm ungrateful because i DARE to criticize this mod. cute. learn to take some constructive criticism, instead of just criticizing the critic.

i admit i was harsh in my original review, but that's no reason to flame me and call me a shithead. you're the one who got this started by making a personal attack.

that whole "you can't criticize the mod because you don't have the talent to make one yourself" argument is a fallacy- specifically, a false premise. you assume that i don't have the talent to make a mod. that's like someone asserting that you're in no position to say a rock song sucks because let's see YOU do something like that. unfortunately, i see this argument ALL THE TIME in modding communities.

look, i'm trying to be as constructive as i can here (that's why i basically rehashed my review in a more non-agressive manner). but you needlessly rip into me. yes i understand it's mostly just you and that the mod is your baby, but like all forms of art, it can only improve with constructive criticism. the least you could do is to take my criticisms into consideration, instead of flaming me.

Wooo, it's out! I've already played it somewhat, and the mod is great. :D The only thing I'm wondering about is, can you still add bot companions in your own created server? Tried addbots #, but didn't work. Other than that, the mod is fun, looking forward to playing with humans against the zombie menace.

you don't get it, do you? i'm treating this mod, like any mod, as a work of art- because games are art, and like any art there's good art and there's bad art. i write for a living, okay? i know what it's like to have someone rip into a creation that you put your heart and soul into. but at least i'm man enough to take criticism.

i was disappointed by this. for starters, there's no more singleplayer campaign.

the creepy, SHish atmosphere of the original is gone.

i found the "naked zombies" to be uninspired and a sign of lazy design.

the gameplay is ridiculous. i honestly don't see how a mere pistol is heavy enough to drastically slow down the player. a giant minigun, yes, but a pistol? for a mod that's trying to be as realistic as possible (as evidenced by the lack of a HUD) it sure has some unrealistic gameplay.

i didn't find this mod fun at all, and neither did anyone i played the mod with. even the zombie script for counterstrike: source had more rewarding gameplay. (and i didn't like that either.)

about the only thing i like was the music, which is excellent.

AJ_Quick Aug 7 2006, 12:34am says:

So what tipped you off that KF was a realism mod?

Was it the fact that there's freaks running around with Elongated growths as arms, the ability to cloak themselves, and some of which are half human half spider hybrids? Cuz thats ... you know....pretty Realistic.

Too bad you didn't enjoy the mod. I hope you have better luck finding a mod more suited to your (discerning) tastes

P.S you already posted your rant in the mod's profile, but thanks for re-posting it here!

The KF developmoent team (ie. me) would like to thank you for taking your time out to brighten our day after all the hard work! Keep it up ,sunshine!

Dethtoll, while I agree with you that the "you can't make a mod therefore you have no opinion" argument is a moot point, you posted no constructive criticism towards KF2. It was just flaming, and the most constructive advice that could be gained from it was: "Remake this mod from scratch", which doesn't do anyone any good.

dethtoll Aug 7 2006, 2:12am says:

constructive criticism, in case you didn't know, is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one.

i admit that in my initial review i was unconstructive, which is why i have basically repeated myself in a less hostile manner.

i am aware that most of the problems i have with the mod lie in the fact that it's too different from the original version, at least in the artistic sense. but my concerns with gameplay should at least be taken into consideration- like i said, vastly slowing down a player just because he's carrying a pistol? maybe a SLIGHT slowdown would make sense, but any slower than that seems like a poor gameplay idea. the lack of a HUD is another problem: what was the reasoning behind that idea? crosshairs i can understand, and you DO get used to it.

i guess what i'm mostly upset about is the way everyone seems to be coming out of the woodwork to take a **** on me because i dared have a differing opinion. bad internet, stop being so typical.

dethtoll Aug 7 2006, 2:21am says:

to expand on the HUD issue: the point of the HUD is to give the player feedback. okay, so while a good player who passed 4th grade math can count how many rounds are in a clip and multiply that by the number of clips he has, what's the point of removing all knowledge of what the player himself has on his body? there should at least be some form of feedback as to how much health he has left. i don't mean a simple 100% bar, i mean some sort of visual feedback such as the screen fading, growing more and more red, perhaps throbbing as if with pain.

So wait, no HUD? So how do you know if you're going to die? You just either run away from everything all the time, or just shut your eyes, shamble slowly at zombies with favourite weapon and hope you've got more than 1 hitpoint? How does that work?

I guess I'll have to try the mod, but that doesn't sound fun to me. Sounds less like strategy and more like just cross fingers and hope. Or maybe I'm missing something? (not trying to troll, I'm just trying to get the gist of the gameplay before diving head first into something I might not even like)

Shrimp Aug 7 2006, 3:22am says:

That's a bit of an idiotic comment, TKAzA.

By that reasoning, you therefor have no right to ever critisize a commercial game (since to "real" developers, you're just a user too), and if dethtoll were indeed a modder, you would take his comments seriously.

Also by not accepting feedback - good and bad - from gamers/users, what exactly is the point of "modders" ever releasing anything? Maybe you'd prefer some little closed community where the only people allowed to participate are people who make mods. I'm sure you'll enjoy getting loads of feedback from your 5-man user base. At least it'll be positive feedback though.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with any of the comments with regards to KF, or those made by dethtoll, but TKAzA, you are hardly doing anything for the "image" of modders. If anything, that attitude will do nothing but turn more users away from the mod scene. Obviously that dosn't help anyone.

And dethtoll, you don't sound like you are being constructively critical so much as just wanting to be a naysayer because no one else is. You made your points, no need to argue it out, now keep it dropped or expect a warning.

TKAzA -what is wrong on saying that you don?t like a mod? "wooot, helly f** yeah -this mod roxX !!1one" is as useful as "in my opinion its crap" -but nobody is angry about the "wooot" screamer -so why be angry on them who don?t like it? this is a "comments" thread and not "only suger in your ***" thread. The "make it better" argument is just stupid. It doesn?t matter at all if you can do it better to judge about the mod is fun for YOU to play or not.. Even my grandmother has the right to say: "ah I don?t like this game.. I don?t like mods at all" and its also her right to post it in here cause its a comment.. if its usefull or not -thats another question -but as I read so far YOU TKAzA posted NOTHING usefull, too -so?
and before you go with your "but I?m a 1337 modder and you don?t nothing" -i?m a 3d artist for 6 years now and worked for a q2 (nosferatu), ut2k3 (global Warzone) and hl2 (Perfect Dark: Source) so..

btw: I like the mod :)

Regarding the lack of HUD, do you mean the HUD is too minimalistic, or that there is no HUD at all? It could be worth checking if the HUD is set to 'Hide HUD' in the options screen. For some reason the UT2k4 engine sometimes likes to set 'Hide HUD' On as the default. Why? I wish I knew....

Yeah, I'm wondering where the "No HUD" thing came from, too, we uh...have a HUD? The only thing it doesn't have is a crosshair, and you get used to not having one eventually. I finally got bots working, you just need to type adminlogin "password" (with "password" being whatever you set the admin pass to) while in the Ready screen, then you can add bots.

That's Gr8 Mr. Kadish. Congrats for Sinishing your mod - I read where you came from, the whole history of never giving up. That takes cojones and it stands as a great example for people who want to mod a game but don't feel up to it. Unforts I am at my parents house as I am attending my brothers marriage in a couple of days. Whish I could play with your guys, because the atmosphere in 1.o was already creepy and cool. I don't know about the flaming and stuff, but I hope the zombies are still scary even though they look a little like ragged crash test dummies now. I really loved 1.o, even it got me cursing so many times for loosing my guns - and I can't wait to get onto the one server - the only one - and start punching zombie meat again. The stuff in 1.o was so good to me, such a thrill to survive that I can't imagine how much better its gotta be in this version. Nosin more to wait for now. Thank you Mr. Kadish and Team. See you Sinside!

and to all you flamers out there. Learn to play this, survive on your own or with another player and you will never, never ever wanna say that this is dull and you prefer uninspired Zombiescripts instead. The version 1.o was great once you survived a couple of times. It really takes strategy and intelligence. Its not just pumping the gun and giving away free lead. Don't make me mad! This mod is great.

OK, me and my buddies played this a bunch at our LAN this weekend, and in conclusion its awesome just like the last version.

Pretty much our main issues is that more stuff would be nice, more maps, more guns, but every mod can use that.

And also, I'd like the gameplay changed so that you keep playing harder and harder rounds till you all die, instead of 10 round limit. The game really gets fun at the higher rounds when the fleshpounds start to pour into the rooms, forcing the team to retreat and fight with their backs to the wall.

And it'd be nice to be able to manually scale how many zombies there is each wave, fighting huge swarms of weak zombies is a lot of fun, especially when ammo starts to run scarce and the team start to run out of room to retreat.

So good work, I didn't bother to read all the pointless drama that apparently has been happening, but keep up the good work anyway, looking forward to the next version.
