Haunted is a survival horror game that takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, where the player must make their way out of the city alive. The player must defend themselves against the reanimated corpses called the Haunted, as they make their way through an old auto garage, dirty underground sewers, deserted city streets, an abandoned theatre, and a dilapidated tavern. I was one of six Level Designers on the project, and was responsible for scripting the car light puzzle sequence, implementing enemy encounters across the city streets, as well as designing and building the interior of the abandoned theatre in collaboration with another Level Designer.

Well mebbe that was true back in 2012, but it does play literally 'out of the box' now. Therein lies the problem. The exotically redesigned Zombies, Head-crabs and weapons are a nightmare of sorts. I mean what is the point of re-spawning gobs of these things if the shotgun your using keeps 'flourishing' after each shot?!?!?! Shoot - kill - flourish - get attacked by three or four more while you wave your weapon around. Pointless.

There are some interesting features in here, but I'd just as soon delete it and go on to another one. On a scale of 1 -10, I'll give a three.

I had the same issue, for everyone who get a black screen on startup do this: ( a quick fix )

Go to the resource folder and open up GameMenu.res and change it to look like this:

"GameMenu"
{
"1"
{
"label" "#GameUI_GameMenu_ResumeGame"
"command" "ResumeGame"
"OnlyInGame" "1"
}
"5"
{
"label" "#GameUI_GameMenu_NewGame"
"command" "engine exec chapter1"
"notmulti" "1"
}
"12"
{
"label" "#GameUI_GameMenu_Options"
"command" "OpenOptionsDialog"
}
"13"
{
"label" "#GameUI_GameMenu_Quit"
"command" "Quit"
}
// "14"
// {
// "label" "HTMLView"
// "command" "engine ToggleHTMLView"
// "notmulti" "1"
// }
}

then open up steam and right click Haunted v1.5 and properties and setlaunch options write "-console -exec chapter1"

now. open the game again and take the mouse cursor all the way up on the screen and take it slowly down until you hear a little boom, that means you have it over new game. when you click new game it automatically sends you to chapter1. As said in the new gamemenu file.

Now it will still be black , so there are more to do, do this:
wait a little until you cannot see the cursor (which mean you now are in game)

click on esc, don't click on the cursor cus that could disable console.
just write this:

sv_cheats 1
mat_fullbright 1
kill

remember don't write it at once, write sv_cheats 1 and hit enter and so on. When you kill yourself it will rebuild the shaders and everything should work. It did for me though :)
Good luck

*** I have not tested this ***

If the above fix is over your level or even if it isn't then this fix could be much more efficient. As said I haven't tested this but I believe it could work to remove the black screen errors.

So here is what you should try:

1: Open the steam folder and locate steamapps. Then go into the sourcemods folder and there you will find the folder for the haunted mod. Most likely called "haunted".
2: Next is to go into the maps folder and delete the graph folder and soundcache folder.
3: Delete other unnecessary cache crap like the downloadlists folder, cache folder and downloads folder.

That should do it, though I'm not sure. Somebody try it and tell us if it works. :P

You should probably take a backup of the folders mentioned before testing this, in case I'm wrong.

From what I've played this mod really isn't worth playing.. may seem a little harsh but a horror survival game where all the zombies glow blue doesnt really work.

Is "The Haunted" Supposed to be another word for Zombie related cannon fodder?
