Description

We're gonna match this with custom character models and fancy death sequences later in Hatchet, but for now this are some (minimalist) screenshots taken. Also the lighting was absolute crap in these shots.

Shotguns spew burger, hollowpoints make heads explode, and generally blowing someone to bits entirely is not pretty in the least.

WHY? That is a question I'm very much expecting to hear in response to this. I've never been a proponent of excessive gore or mindless violence in the past, but this is actually surprisingly deep in reasoning. Especially once we get character models employed, you see a lot of the effects of your arsenal first hand. You can, as always, turn off gore in the menu, which actually removes standard giblets as well now so we have a lower minimum threshold for gore, but also a radically higher cap threshold.

Deus ex was always a good teacher against mindless violence. Paul, while a bit of a nag, was large on promoting nonlethal takedowns. And although Anna was happy to play devil's advocate, everything from Louis pan to random hostages made people turn their heads and give negative reinforcement for the mindless violence. Although you'll likely find yourself in fights with real enemies in Hatchet, the gore system is kind of a method of "biting back" at the player for excessive or over the top killing, and I think it adds a layer immersion or shock to things, which pulls the player into the world and may make them consider less lethal takedowns, especially if they are particularly squeamish... but I'm sure some people might just get a kick out of it because it adds grit to the action. Oh well.
