It's not in the books other than a scant mention in FoR where they're called carriers too, apparently.

Halo encyclopedia states it though.

Alright. You gotta be able to choose factions, so you can pit the UNSC against themselves and vice versa for Covenant. I wanna see two Marathons duke it out... that would be so much fun.

Description

Final version of the Marathon class cruiser.

Rather than the old view that cruisers are essentially "just another ship" in that they're the natural progression from frigates and destroyers by simply having more of everything, cruisers will feel different to play around with - They'll be much larger and heavily armoured, taking a very long time to destroy even under heavy fire, and have far heavier and more exotic armament.

While smaller ships make use of cannons and turrets to deal with strike craft and for use in ground support, cruisers will be equipped with a myriad of turrets that make them almost immune to smaller vessels and larger weapons that allow them to engage heavy covenant ships on a very even footing. Cruisers will literally be giant floating fortresses in space, but the cost and length of production mean you won't be making them in any large numbers.

A standard UNSC fleet might consist of 2 marathons, a carrier, and an escort of maby 20-30 frigates and destroyers. Each individual ship will count more and take longer to destroy than vanilla HW2 counter parts, making battles longer, but at the same time production times will be upped considerably, making battles far more decisive.
