Are you tired of all the bad Half-Life 2 with Portal gun mods that just use Portal's binaries or even just copy paste Half-Life 2 maps to Portal's directory and call a day? Well, you're in luck! Because my mod doesn't have any of of that!

My mod actually recompiles Portal binaries to fix most major bugs in Portal which occur in HL2 maps (NPC's can actually shoot you, flashlight is working to name a few). Currently it's pretty much the best way to play Half-Life 2 with Portal gun.

Also it's source code is on GitHub!

Here's a list of all of the major fixes and additions:

  • You can erase portals by reloading portal gun
  • Health regeneration is toggleable with "sv_regeneration_enable" or in "Mod Options" menu without annoying red tint
  • Fall damage is toggleable with "sv_receive_fall_damage" or in "Mod Options" menu
  • Flashlight is enabled
  • NPCs can actually shoot you now (And even through portals! Because apparently Valve left some code for that. Only at specific angles though)
  • Backported crosshair from current version of Half-Life 2
  • No crashes on the map load in Half-Life 2 and Episodes
  • You won't get stuck in non-solid static props near portals
  • You can rapid click to shoot Portals faster, like in Portal 2
  • You can set either Chell playermodel or default Half-Life 2 playermodel with "cl_playermodel "models/player/chell.mdl"" or "cl_playermodel "none"" respectively or in "Mod Options" menu (you will need to start a new game or load a map through console to see the change though)
  • There is HUD QuickInfo (aka crosshair) from Portal's beta. Toggleable with "beta_quickinfo 1|0" or in "Mod Options" menu
  • Crowbar swings through Portals
  • No crash when Magnusson Device hits the ground

Some things that don't work properly (yet, hopefully they will someday):

  • There's no collision for displacements near portals. Which means you will fall through displacements close to portals. Displacements are usually used to make bumpy ground or hills, valleys, trenches, slopes etc. though they also can be flat and just used to blend two or more textures together. It's a pretty complicated issue to fix, so for now get your noclip ready. You can also just avoid displacements near portals by jumping over them for example because it's usually pretty easy to distinguish displacements from normal brush terrain since the brushes are always flat
  • There are some visual glitches with portal gun, some of them can be fixed by saving and loading
  • Sometimes the game will crash if you place your portals in certain places (like on the floor of the red barn in d1_canals_06) or if you push physics engine too far
  • Guns are still attached to NPC's hands when they're supposed to be hidden
  • Then you grab something with gravity gun and go through portal weird glitches can happen
  • Emplacement gun in d1_canals_01a is a bit broken - you can activate it only at very specific angles
  • Particle (and some other colors) are inverted on Linux
  • Music can be duplicated sometimes. Use snd_cull_duplicates 1 to fix it, just be sure to set it back to 0 when music ends because other sounds might sound weird if you always have it set to 1.

Demonstration (version 0.8-beta though, so it's a bit outdated):

Requirements:

  • Half-Life 2, respective Episode or Lost Coast installed
  • Portal installed
  • Half-Life 2 or the Episode or Lost Coast and Portal and this mod need to be on the same drive in order for everything to work.

Installation:

  • Copy the respective folder for the game you want to play to your sourcemods directory and then launch the mod from steam.
  • Press "[" to get Portal Gun (can be rebound in the settings).

This mod is dead. Mmod isn't open source mod, this is just impossible.

Some sounds are missing and/or broken when using the mod to play portal, sounds include: all GLaDOS voice lines, hovering sound for the energy pellet, general ambiance, etc.

Everything except for the sounds are pre-mounted, so I just launched the first map, all the textures, all the models, all the maps work flawlessly, only thing missing are the sounds.

I'm playing the portal levels to help me make a mod that uses the fixes that your mod has to the game.

well, they don't work because you need scripts and scenes from portal. also if you're a developer you should probably create issue on github instead of asking about problems here. this place is more for the players of the mod, not for the devs

If it's scenes issue - think we can just compile Portal and Half Life 2 scenes together.

Adding the scenes from portal only adds subtitles.

Still no sound.
