Today marks the 71th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War.
9 May celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany and the end of the Second World War (also referred to as 'The Great Patriotic War' in Russia and in other post-Soviet countries).
USSR lost over 20 million people in the war.
Victory day is about remembering those who gave their lives to achieve the victory and honors the bravery of Russian soldiers, France soldiers, Britain soldiers, the United States and other countries Europe. And Russian people on the whole whose heroism saved the country from Nazi invaders.
The holiday marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the Second World War in 1945. Unlike Europe where it is celebrated on May 8, Victory Day in Russia is celebrated on May 9 as Germany’s surrender was signed late in the evening on May 8, 1945 when it was already May 9 in Russia .
Given the loss of life it remembers, it is generally a solemn and somber day. Victory Day in Russia is a sacred holiday for Russians who often say that there is not a single family in the country who did not lose someone in that war.

Pretty weird since didn't Russia also fight the Japs? Though I guess not as extensively as the US or us Far Eastern nations.

Why does everyone say that Russia won? Except Russia in the USSR was 14 republics. Their sons died for the victory too... Don't forget it!
being conquered basically means your nations isn't a nation anymore. The only soldiers that invaded berlin were russians. Sure there were some partisans and such from other countries but not any organised armies making it an official russian victory... Tho it really is an allief victory
I am a little confused...
There is Russian in both my ancestry and my extended family, so I feel joy for the Russian people, fr0st47.
During WWII, my grandfather served as a master sergeant in Italy for the American forces there, and was in command over the railroad systems for Northern Italy. His trains were constantly being bombed and strafed. On his way home, his ship was bombed, yet he made it home unscathed.
Wherever you have people possessed as it were by the devil, ambition, and delusions of being mankind's "savior," there will always a tremendous and deplorable loss of life.
I rejoice in every victory where such men are laid to rest. The people of this world deserve to live lives of peace and prosperity, and perhaps one day they shall.
