Setting:
In the not-too-distant future, the United States, as we know it, has changed drastically. Due to several failed military endeavors overseas, the face of war has cast its shadow over the Land of the Free. In addition to the mayhem of war on American soil, the North American climate has deteriorated drastically, due to nuclear fallout and industrial pollution. Many of the major cities have constructed monumental “Domes” that completely encapsulate the metropolitan areas, in an effort to protect citizens from the dangers outside.

The country has seen nothing but war and death for five years, and the beautiful landscape of the American West is once again "Wild."

New Global Union
The New Global Union of European and Asian countries (shortly known as the "Union") have invaded from the West Coast, pushing as far East as the Mississippi River.

The Union has access to a great wealth of military might and are backed by a strange, powerful technology of unknown origin. Even though the war has greatly decreased its resources, the Union still shows a vast technological advantage over the Allied Powers. The Union utilizes armor and artillery very effectively, and arms its soldiers with sophisticated equipment and weaponry.

The Allied Powers
The struggling American state is not totally alone in its efforts, as a few foreign entities such as Great Britain and Israel have devoted resources to the cause. These countries have united and are commonly known as the "Allies."

The Allied industry has fallen well short of the needs of its Armed Forces, requiring the Top-ranking Generals to totally rethink their modern battlefield tactics. Without overwhelming support of armor, the Allies focus on tactical strikes, aerial troop deployment, and old-fashioned intelligence and strength of will.

The Reformed Colonial America
Faced with the invading foreign armies and the reality of the crumbling American Empire, a small group of independent militia has risen to power in the far northwestern corner of the nation. The group, referred to as the “Colonials,” is determined to establish a new American regime, one based firmly in the original context of the US Constitution.

The Colonials use a mix of captured Union and Allied weaponry, and must focus their efforts on surprise and covert operations. They have great knowledge of the terrain, but are generally outnumbered on most battlefields.

Game Mechanics:
War Room Website - allows players to view general information about the game and status of the war, from an objective point of view. They will have to register their Steam ID name in order to join the war effort. During registration, they will choose a faction, soldier name, and password. They will have access to their faction's intelligence: maps, troop numbers, limited battle plans, archived news, and forum.

Global War Control – this will be the mechanism that will collect data from the battle servers, and interpret it into what happens next in the war. We will initially set up the system in a certain scenario, and then let the players determine the outcome of the battles. In the beginning, we will play the parts of the Field Generals, deciding where the sections of battles will take place, and what tactical movements the armies will take. But, in the future, it’s possible that players will have a greater role in the tactical play of the global war.

The overall map will be divided into dozens of hexagonal cells (Sectors), which will represent areas of military interest. The terrain within each cell will determine what the battle maps will look like; each type of terrain will be called a “Terrain Group”. So, for instance, one cell might be located over the Rocky Mountains, so its battle map(s) will represents a mountainous/forest environment. Another cell might contain a Metro area, and its battle map(s) will show a more urban combat setting. There will be many different maps for each “Terrain Group” and each city will have several different maps. This will add to the feel of a grand-scale conflict. Some of the less-important areas can be grouped into MultiCells, and fought over through only one battle.

Skirmish Servers – These will operate like familiar multiplayer setups, where players will join a server and start playing against each other. The data from these skirmishes will be uploaded to the central database and computed into the Global War Progress.

Media Update

News

I've updated the Media section of the profile to reflect the work we've been doing over the last few months.  We'll continue to update as we go along.

There are images of weapon and player model WIP's, and some texture/skinning work as well.

Coming up in the near future, we'll have new hi-res face maps, and some concept art from the New Design School.  We're also working on a promotional video and some new music tracks.

Stay tuned for more!

Hmm... just on the story. How about if the whole world was like a nuclear wasteland with only a few cities surviving but several large rival factions rose up? I see what Spiderbite means with retaliation strikes so perhaps that's more realistic?

I forgot to mention that I realise that this is just a game but if someone uses real locations a story should be more accurate and believable. Otherwise is better to have red and green team, humans and aliens etc. Thanks.

Looks like interesting mod, but I must agree with Nightwolf63 the story doesn't sound realistic at all. My comment is meant to be constructive criticism. English is not my native language. So,

1. Nuclear devastation of this size would have impact on the entire population of the Earth. And the immediate area would be uninhabitable.
2. You don't attack any country that has nukes. Especially one that has enough of them to blow up any and all continents. If you do they will retaliate and the game is over for everyone. Nothing ever happened during the cold war because all the sides knew the consequences.
3. Big pollution doesn't hover over one place nor is created by one country alone. If you had a pollution that would affect entire continent you can be sure it would be everywhere and not in one place.
4. Europe and Asia is hardly "global" and not to mention unlikely "union". Not all countries in Europe are friends or they plan on ever being (I know I live there). Same goes to Asia.
5. "Technology of unknown origin"? Not very creative. Used in many games and movies.
6. There were already 2 or 3 multi-player games with this idea (many countries/unions) and they didn't have following as expected. Many polls indicate that people don't like games that have real countries in conflict. They prefer fake factions more like Quake.

All this refers to your story and is intended as constructive criticism. I think the story would be better if there were humans against aliens or something like that. Sorry for any mistakes in English wording but this is not my language. Thanks.

I'm not sure exactly what it is, but there's something about this mod that I really like. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this.

I understand what you're saying, but the fallout is a result of tactical nukes and other types of weapons used through the war so far. The story starts about 5 years into the war, so the landscape of America has been warped from constant battles and resource scavanging.

Thanks for the interest, guys. Not every state will have a unique map associated with it. We'll break the territory up into zones, and have maps for that zone. Down the road, the ultimate plan is to expand the game onto an independent engine, making it a stand-alone product.

In doing that, we'll be able to expand the game universe to include about 6 factions, lots more territory, and new gameplay elements. Eventually, we hope to include elements of a Real-Time Strategy game for non-combat players to use. More to come on that at a later date.

Right now, our goal is to use HL2 as a platform for the game to build our team, build a fanbase, and improve our skills.

*NOTE* We have a new website under construction that should be available in the weeks ahead.

I think its a really good idea but i agree with Eklypse that it is very ambitious. Perhaps for the maps you could do one map for each state... that would still be 49 states (if you drop hawaii and keep alaska) so ALOT of maps, but if this game can indeed be made then it would be very cool! armies and stuff with people around the world :D would you take stuff from real life? like a smashed up empire state building in the distance in the ruins of new york (or something)

As we move forward past the Alpha stage, we'll be able to add multiple maps for each type of environment. Since the main front of the war starts in the middle of the country, we'll be focusing on Grassland, Rural, and Inner City maps. They will then correspond to that "tile" on the map.

But, down the road, we'll have at maps for all kinds of environments...grassland, desert, inner city, rural town, snowy weather, river delta, forrest mountains.

You guys are ambitious. How many maps are we talking about? The global stats upload sounds difficult.
