There's sound in space, massive starships with exposed command structures and no nukes in all-out warfare, but smoke out of a gun barrel is what you find odd? My man, there is stranger stuff in star wars :D

It's all plasma weaponry anyways, even with containment fields I doubt the Tibanna gas is perfectly sealed in each projectile. I think it's a nice touch.

Nukes are impractical that's why when there is much more powerful and quicker weaponry to use, nukes are slow and easily found by scanners due to the concentrated radiation signatures so they would be picked out destroyed also most ships capital ships are armed with quite a few anti missile/fighter point defense lasers and turrets. Even if they did hit, standard shields have equipped to deflect energy and radiation similar to nukes because turbo lasers and other energy weapons emit similar things, you to remember the shields and armor on star wars ships is pretty strong, the Mandator during the clone wars for example it's shields were so powerful that it could withstand constant bombardment from a fleet of a 1,000 CIS destroyers. Do you really think one nuke could do much? then of course most capital ships are equipped with two variations of shields deflector for energy weapons and ray shields for solid projectiles.

The exposed command structures is because the bridges were designed to be sort of like naval ships and other things from the 70s that were often built with exposed areas like command structures. And once a set design base was settled you kind of had to role with it for the rest of the series.

@anon, the ships in star wars were designed with world war II battleships in mind, not 70s cruisers.

Also that story about 1000 destroyers pounding a single ship and its shields surviving, that sounds like complete bs, sorry, but that just doesn't happen.

Also, nukes tend to wreck everything. Ever heard of the Tsar bomb? That'd wreck an entire fleet, there's no shielding or deflector dish or whatever that could possibly handle the power of e=mc^2 when that amount of mass gets converted. Science wins every time :)

Thanks to afro the imperial and rebel factions now have different sounding turbolasers. Also the more turbolasers per shot, the heavier it sounds. (quad sounds heavier than single, octuple harder than quad)
