Yeah, but it debuted in the old TIE Fighter game released in 1994.

Description

The Imperial Rocket Sloop was specifically designed for a single purpose: To defeat the TIE Defenders of a rogue imperial Admiral. To achieve this purpose it exploits the Defenders one weakness: Its lack of countermeasures.

Armed with a large variety of missiles, the Rocket Sloop can launch its barrage from far away, and use it's advanced SLAM system (Power to Engines II: SubLight Acceleration Motor Boogaloo) to get out of the combat area before the Defenders that survived can close the distance to engage with their closer-range ion and laser cannons. This has proven very effective during my testing. Incidentally, if a unit counters a TIE Defender, it also counters a great many other things.

In the mod, the rocket sloop is equipped with: One ion-pulse missile to strip the Defender of its shields (IP missiles take out all starfighter shields for 14 seconds in a small area), then follows it up with 4 armor piercing, 1 concussion, and 2 general-purpose missiles, if all missiles hit it can take out a TIE Defender almost twice over. It's also equipped with a singe medium laser cannon, but if that is used you've already fucked up.

The rocket sloop has two abilities, the SLAM, and an ammo switch to switch from firing 4 AP missiles to 4 HE missiles, the rest will fire regardless. This allows the rocket sloop to engage a large variety of enemy threats.

However, the greatest strength of the rocket sloop is also its greatest weakness, against any unit with countermeasures it can only hope to wear them out (Flares/PD lasers) or run away with the SLAM (Passive jammer). Quite a few units in the new system are quipped with some form of countermeasures so the rocket sloop while highly effective if it can indeed be used, can only be used against specific targets.

While it has unimpressive hull strength and armor, it does have extremely sturdy shields, allowing it to survive enemy fire and letting you get it out of combat. Great for hit and run attacks.
