A deserted island... a lost man... memories of a fatal crash... a book written by a dying explorer. Dear Esther is a ghost story told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional gameplay, the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of the island, of who you are and why you are here. Fragments of story are randomly triggered by moving around the environments, making every telling unique. Features a stunning, specially commissioned soundtrack. Forget the normal rules of play; if nothing seems real here, it's because it may just be all a delusion. What is the significance of the aerial - What happened on the motorway - is the island real or imagined - who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here? The answers are out there, on the lost beach and the tunnels under the island. Or then again, they may just not be, after all...

Description

Updated Dear Esther with fixed link to level 4. This fully replaces v1.0, please delete that and unzip this into your SourceMods folder

Apologies about the bug in the previous version - this should now work!

Changes to the original version:

- Improved mapping and terrain fixes for the levels 1, 2 and 3 (4 to follow soon, honest)
- Removal of player clips and replacement of these with kill triggers to prevent map escapes
- Improved sound mix, including final cue remixed
- Fixed double-cue firing issue in level 2
- Extra story cues added
- Caves section extended

Thanks

Dan

I think developers could learn a thing or two from this mod. I had trouble following some of it, the narriation was a little too subtile at times. Still it sounded poetic enough that I just went along with it. I hope you choose to make more of these it really was very awesome.

This was good. I liked what it was trying to do and it accomplished that to some extent. I liked the open feeling and the narration although overly quiet. I got lost a few times which becomes a problem when you walk like a slug to begin with. But, the feel of the game worked very nicely and I do kind of like the slow pace you made. Very poetic, nice work.

I dont get it! I installed the game, but when I get to the title screen, all it says is "Dear Esther" and it doesn't give me any options (such as Play, options, settings, quit, etc.) What is going on?

You're not getting the usual New Game etc menu? That's a bit bizarre. Have you access to the dev console - if not, set your Steam launch options with -console and start the game. Open the console and type "map donnelly" to open the first level. Should work from there. Weird bug though - maybe some file corruption unzipping it?

A very well made mod. Although it's unconventional it still very interesting. I would love to see something like this being extended to get longer "play". Possibly with more interaction from the "player", which might mean solving puzzles/riddles to continue in the story and that add to the whole story overall.

Anyhow, excellent work! I have no regrets installing this.

Just played this through.

Really refreshing to play something that deviates so far from the conventional mainstream approach to games.

Voice acting was awesome. Serious kudos to both actor and director for delivering a performance of grace and precision.

Music was equally impressive, and I shall be grabbing the soundtrack for some nostalgic listening whenever the mood takes me.

Level design was effective for what the mod set out to achieve, but this brings me to my only criticism...

For a game that relies so heavily on atmosphere to immerse the player (and one that puts in a valiant effort to do so), it's a crying shame that this is attempted with such an outdated and bland-looking engine as Source.

You're clearly extremely talented, and definitely someone to whom the industry should look for some much-needed inspiration, but I implore you: please, please consider producing your next mod on a newer, more powerful engine! It's the only thing holding you back, IMHO.

Otherwise, congratulate yourself for accomplishing something original and full of sinister charm. Well done, mate.

:-)

Yep, I stumbled across this earlier today - it's looking much closer the original art concepts!

Want to take this opportunity to thank you for delivering this experience to us all for free. I am most grateful.

Quick question: was this mod in any way inspired by the cult british horror flick "The Descent"? Only that too features: a traumatic car crash; lots of caves; a lead character who is one step away from insanity; a slightly ambiguous ending.

I look forward to returning to the island...

Tried this one out, reminds of all those classical British horror shows, both on TV and the theater. It also had an horrible way of making me feel ill, just via the dialog.
My only criticism is that you move painfully slow, which wouldn't be so bad if every piece of the environment was absolute eye candy.
Brilliant nonetheless, this has to be one of the best uses of story in any game I've played.
