Conscientious Objector is a Doom 3 mod created by thechineseroom, a research project building experimental FPS games based at the University of Portsmouth, UK.

It uses the first three levels of the commercial game, stripped bare and repopulated, together with some custom code that stops the player from being able to kill anything. Sure, you can shoot the zombies all you like, and they will fall down.. it's just that they'll get back up again... On top of this, rather than being told you're great, like most FPS games, you've got an aggressive NPC on your case and in your ear, who'd like nothing better than to see you end up as a zombie's breakfast, and is going to let you know any chance he gets.

More information about the mod can be found on the project website. Look out for the other two mods being released this summer: Dear Esther (Half Life 2) and Antlion Soccer (Half Life 2 Deathmatch)

Is that really the end? :...(

I mean, wow, that was depressing... (Trying to avoid spoilers) Is there no way around that rather tragic ending? Is the only way to win and avoid that end to do yourself in so the bastard has to get another "volunteer"? ;)

There's some mention of a "strong electrical field" but despite all the malfunctioning equipment around, I don't see anyplace with a testla-coil and a scalpel.

I'm all for non-Hollywood ending, but the game makes you feel guilty, if not downright stupid, for reaching the end of it. I trusted you! ;)

well... yeah. the electrical field is in there in case it ever expands, although its not really getting the downloads to justify the time on that (got about 3/4 of the complete game re-written for it, but time-poor!).. Part of what we wanted to look at with it is completely shifting normal story (including endings) in the opposite direction. But it's meant to be a nasty surprise... Bethsheda already did ending on suicide with Call of Cthulhu - it was tempting, though...

I played your sister mod Dear Esther and that blew me away, now you claim to be a conscientious objector! This looks great too. I'm going to have to dig out and install Doom 3 now!

Well, it's about as different to Dear Esther as it could be, but that's half the fun. I think worth digging D3 out for... thanks for looking!
