Because NATO designates all fighter aircraft with a name starting with "F". They probably ran out of good ones :P
Also, bomber names start with "B" and helis start with "H" :P

That fighter was a legend of its time, but US did want to name it something that will demoralized their own, lets say Fatal, Fury, Fullback, Fallout. Lame name boost troop morale.
