In the TV series and associated media the name Battlestar is assigned to ships of varying sizes, shapes etc in a seemly arbitrary manner. I feel that this is a mistake and that the Colonial navy would have a clear cut structure which assigns ships to groupings depending on the role they have been designed to fulfil. Since the Colonials use a rank structure similar to modern day navies (XOs being Colonels notwithstanding) it makes sense that ships would follow a similar system. Therefore ships in my mod will split into types such as escort, destroyer, cruiser etc.
I have decided that the Battlestar will fit into this system and therefore it needs an explanation and classification to decide what is and what isn't a Battlestar.
Therefore below is my headcanon explanation for a Battlestar.
A name of importance to the Colonials, Battlestar was the name of a powerful warship developed by Picon which quickly became so widely copied that the name became synonymous with a powerful warship which carried an air wing but could also engage in combat.
Battlestars faded into legend once the major inter-colonial wars ended and the rise of AIs led to the Cylons and their Basestars becoming the dominant defence force of the Colonies.
When the Colonials began to fear that a Cylon uprising was coming, they began construction on titanic vessels which they designated as Battlestars after those famed warships. During the war many ships were given the name Battlestar to obscure the true power of the fleet, so that even some small frigates with no fighter wings of their own were labelled as Battlestars.
After the war it was decided that the size and composition of the fleet needed to be laid down in regulation so that the Colonies would be prepared for the next war when it came. It was decided that the fleet would contain at least 120 Battlestars, plus supporting ships. The definition of a Battlestar was established at this point as well, a Battlestar was a warship which could coordinate the actions of a Battlestar group, carry and support 3 or more squadrons of fightercraft and could also engage enemy warships with both conventional and nuclear weaponry.
This definition defines the following classes as Battlestars: Jupiter, Mercury, Arvak, Sleipnir, Minerva and Odin
Despite their visual similarity to Battlestars other classes of ships fall under other definitions. The Talos class for example cannot carry 3 squadrons of Vipers and therefore is a Cruiser.
Right, on things battlestar you may want to define the rest in similar terms.
Eg.
Battlestar - Battleship
Warstar - Cruiser
Firestar - Frigate
Strikestar - Corvette
