This week I reached a sort of milestone: I've managed to cut out about 10,000 files over the last year or so and brought the size of the mod down from roughly 4 Gigabytes down to just under 3 Gigabytes. consolidation has been the key.

consolidating artillery and anti-tank guns into a single folder instead of having separate folders has helped out a lot. likewise putting faction aircraft and halftracks into a one or two folders instead of the original 10-to-15 has helped a bit as well.

we're also getting rid of a lot of units that don't have any historical evidence for existing. that means that you can say 'goodbye' to Belgian, Chinese, and Finnish, Greek halftracks and mechanized division tents. the same holds true for non-historical Airborne divisions.

since artillery has been overhauled and greatly expanded the "Mech Stage" is no longer required for a lot of the minor factions.

even though the next upload will have even more historical nations, regiments, and units than the last upload... it will take up significantly less memory and load-up faster.

Description

with the addition of Denmark we created a series of generic light infantry units that can be used by multiple nations. we've also found a way to integrate a larger variety of light artillery units into the game. along these lines I felt like taking a second look at something I researched three or four years ago: populating the South American continent with some factions so players have more variety in the WW2 game.

I had done research on the Chaco War, Zarumilla War, and Leticia Incident.. but we just didn't have the aircraft, artillery, and armored units required at that time.

now that we finally have some good biplane and some newer bomber models available I found some historical skins and created some (mostly) historical fighter and bomber units for South America.

I'd like to overhaul Brazil to include some pre-war non-Brazilian Expeditionary Force aspects of the Brazilian military. I'm also looking at Mexico.

yes, the next upload will still be released by the end of the year.

the nicest thing about these new factions is that the only new units that we'll require are mostly airplanes. a lot of the other units already exist in the game in one form or another. then it's mostly a matter of adding in new flags, division banners, and other things that take up a trivial amount of memory.

all of the aircraft shown here actually use up less than 8 megs of memory.

all of these schemes are based on historical aircraft. I did make an exception for Colombia: the green mottled paint scheme looked so cool I just ended up putting it on all three of their planes.

since I don't know how to read Spanish some of these schemes were hard to find!

oh, I should point out that Ecuador didn't field any aircraft during the Zarumilla War. I'm including it anyways because I believe it's probably a necessary gameplay balance concession. the minor nations desperately need a bit of air power to be relevant in the WW2 Metagame.
