if you're talking about a bare bones computer without a good graphics card... I would say 768x768 is the largest you could go. there could still be lag issues, though.

if you have a solid graphics card the biggest maps, I find 896x896 to be a very reliable size for larger maps.

the largest map I have always managed to complete in offline play would be 1024x1024 (1,048,576 ground surface units)

if you know that a large portion of the map is going to be covered in water 1152x1152 is the largest map I've managed to consistently finish during offline play.

revisiting the ground surface area idea... I've created maps that were technically 1280x1280 but were covered in 60% water. these maps would definitely crash and burn on less powerful computers, but with plenty of RAM and a good graphics card, you can stretch the boundaries of the game a bit.

the absolute biggest map I think I ever finished was for Tehran to the Caspian Sea. I took a 1408x1408 map. filled up one half with water. drew a line of mountains down the middle. and then only used half of it to make a scenario where the Soviet Union attacks Tehran through an amphibious landing from the Caspian Sea. that way the surface area in the game was only around 991,000 units...

it is an absolutely ridiculous, unhistorical scenario... but it was still a lot of fun to make. I plan to include it in Uncommon Valor 6.0 upload later in the year.
