A slightly sad message for you today - Avalon has stopped production until the release of UT3. Without giving you a full blown post mortem, we have had a few troubles with team morale and organisation over the past few months, which has led me to step down as project manager. The good news is that it's not over - the team leads will be putting their heads together and hashing out a much more fun, focused game. Once we have a clearer picture of the game both in art and words, we feel production will run alot smoother. Thanks for various peoples' support over this time, especially the team. Get in touch if you'd like to stick with us in a few months time.

Introducing Avalon, a tactical shooter mod for Half-Life 2. We want to bring a sense of strategy and communication to players like no other mod has before. Avalon will feature a full squad system, revamped netcode to allow up to 40 players on a server, flying and ground vehicles in multiplayer, and large, outdoor terrain maps. We will also feature a tactical radar/map system for squad leaders to coordinate attacks, and an objective system for squad leaders to light up objectives on their squads radar. And not forgetting a centralised stats and rank system.

Our team is expanding quite quickly, and I'm very happy to welcome 3 new members to the team! Hogosha37 joins as music composer, cjsitter as weapon and character animator, and finally Notsosuperhero joins as our second programmer.

Code is coming along nicely now, and alot of the team, menu and squad code has already been finished! Our progress to the Alpha 1 rapid prototype continues nicely. Also the artists have not been slacking (much :P), and we have 3 concept shots for you today:

Avalonian city

Avalonian Assault rifleTerran Assault rifle

Please feel free to check out our backstory on our public forums here while our website nears completion - there will be a ton of information about the people and history of our world once the website goes live.

We are still seeking team members! We are looking for modellers, mappers and more concept artists. If you like the look of this mod and would like to contribute, please feel free to email me here: jambozal@avalon-mod.com

sounds like your setting yourself one hell of a task, lets hope you can live upto it. although.... you do already have 2 coders when most mods struggle to get any coders at al so i guess you guys have more change of pulling all that off than most mods do of pulling off the simple stuff.l

Revamped netcode? Uh oh. Is it really worth fiddling with one of the hardest bits of code to get right for eight extra players? What else are you doing with it?

"We want to bring a sense of strategy and communication to players like no other mod has before."

Have you played natural selection for half life 1? Personally my favorite game of all time because, in part, of its use and dependents on strategy and communication. You will be hard pressed to top them but if you do I may have to make your game my new favorite. Good luck, I don't watch many mods but I will watch yours.

Why discourage a good thing? If they are willing to put in the time don't try to discourage them. From the sound of it 8 more players might make this more fun.

Our coders are ready and willing to give it a try, we figure why not waste that :) . It has been done, at least with vehicle play in multiplayer, with two mods I know of; Incoming Source, and another I forget the name of. Yes 40 players is going to be a challenge, but like gorilla said we do believe it would give the gameplay a great boost, especially with the squad system we plan.

Hopefully our communications and strategy will live up to the NS legend ;) we're going for a slightly more BF2 approach to this, but there's definitely alot of NS influences to our system.

very cool concepts + game ideas.. all the best with this! A nice futuristic bf2esque mod is very appealing to me. 40 players sounds great.

Why the need for 40 players? Isn't 32 enough? Just because you're rounding up doesn't necessarily mean it still won't feel chaotic with 32 players running around a single map, you know.

40 players does seem excessive, but it will help the squad system no end. When you do see our final gameplay system, I'm sure you'll agree it wouldn't be the same with only 32... and we'll tell you all about that when the website is finally finished
