Pushing on and on, their planes are going strong
Air Force number one
Somewhere down below they're looking for the foe
Bomber's on the run
You can't hide, you can't move, just abide
Their attack's been proved (raiders in the dark)
Silent through the night the witches join the fight
Never miss their mark
Canvas wings of death
Prepare to meet your fate
Night Bomber Regiment

Description

The 58th Tactical Wing - ‘Night Witches’.

With Romulan lines of communications beginning to spread thin the Romulan fleet became increasingly vulnerable to targeted surgical strikes. After Starfleet's last-minute victory at the battle of Sol, Starfleet Command organised an immediate offensive to keep the Romulans off balance.

The Advanced Heavy Cruiser project, code-named ‘Labyrinth’, had produced the exceptionally versatile Daedalus-class starship. Though not as large as their older NX cousins, the Daedalus packed a much larger punch and with a smaller mass was far more responsive in manoeuvres. It was also far quicker and easier to produce and had the same warp factor as the heavier Yorktown-class - a blistering Warp 7. The Daedalus had quickly become Starfleet's most common, most adaptable starship.

The 58th Tactical Wing, headed by the Raskova, were nicknamed the ‘Night Witches’ by those in Starfleet, specialising, as they did, in performing deep strike missions on the Romulan rear guard. Smashing targets of opportunity, the three ships would glide in deep space passively observing signals, jumping on anything out of the ordinary. It was common for civilian traffic to be sometimes privy to a surprise Daedalus escort when running at high warp to make a delivery on time.

In this particular engagement the Night Witches destroy a Romulan command ship responsible for directing Romulan reinforcements, as well as using its extensive ECM equipment to upset Starfleet's command and control ability. The escorting ‘Capsize’ destroyer was largely ignored as the three ships focused on their primary target, scoring numerous hits before warping out as its power core went critical.

The Night Witches were credited for destroying or crippling 17 Romulan ships and 5 fixed installations. They also did heavy damage to Romulan supply lines as they seized commercial traffic suspected of keeping the Romulan war machine operational.
