Ages of the Federation is a new total conversion mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. This mod takes place in the Enterprise and Original series eras, focusing on the conflict between the early Federation and Klingon Empire. A resurgent Romulan Star Empire, angry and still licking its wounds after their defeat to Earth and her allies waits in the shadows, ready to take advantage of any of misstep by either the warring powers. The Xindi, new to the galactic stage are also eager to forge their own path.
A group of Romulan Birds of Prey move stealthily into striking distance of a United Earth outpost at the dawn of the Earth-Romulan War. The Romulans' ability to mount lightning fast surprise attacks cost Starfleet's fledgling armada of starships dearly throughout the entirety of the conflict.
Humanity's arrival and subsequent heavy impact on the interstellar community was an intolerable affront to the Romulan Empire, which benfited from the animosity between the Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites. When United Earth's diplomatic efforts led to the formation of the Coalition of Planets, the Romulans knew that a change in the balance of power was afoot and that the covert manipulation of regional conflicts would no longer be enough to maintain Romulan dominance. Direct action was needed, and that action would be directed at the upstart newcomers who had proven so annoyingly effective at unifying the Empire's potential rivals.
The Empire's first move was to provoke the Earthmen, as a test of their resolve. When the Imperial Navy's initial probing attacks were met with a 'demand for an explanation', the Romulans' suspicions were confirmed - this so-called 'United Earth' was weak. The Coalition would crumble once the humans were conquered.
