This mod makes Max Payne brutally hardcore... Play it only if you know the game inside and out and you want a challenge.
To play this mod, copy file "A Cold Day In Hell v1.1.mpm" to your Max Payne folder, launch Max Payne.exe and choose "A Cold Day In Hell v1.1" from the "Choose customized game" menu.
List of changes:
Enemies:
- Enemies are much more accurate than before;
- Enemy shooting rate was greatly increased;
- The ratio of enemies’ health, Max's health and weapon damage has been changed. Enemies can take more damage; Max, on the contrary, dies easier.
- Enemies spend less time in stunlock when taking damage - this makes firefights VERY difficult!
- Headshot damage multiplier increased from 3 to 6 (for bosses it’s still 3 though). Arms and legs multipliers were increased from 0.75 and 0.5 to 0.8 both.
Weapons:
- New weapons: MP5 and dual MP5s. Mercenaries in the Cold Steel factory and Aesir Security Guards now equipped with MP5;
- Dual desert eagle now available;
- Picking up ammo boxes and weapons gives you less ammo (not for all types of weapons);
- Some weapons (deagle or ingram) have less bullets in the magazine;
- The amount of ammo Max can carry was lowered (that includes grenades and molotovs);
- Rate of fire for many weapons was changed (mainly increased). The machine guns now finally feel like machine guns!
- Bullet spread for all weapons was changed (mainly lowered).
General:
- Difficulty levels - Fugitive, Hard-boiled and DOA - are almost identical. The only difference is in the amount of saves available. Detective has 7 saves per level, Hard-boiled has 3 and DOA has 1;
- Dynamic difficulty adjustment is off;
- Bullet time (BT) mechanic does not simplify the gameplay as much as it did in the original game. The maximum amount of BT was lowered to 10 seconds; "depth" (multiplier) of BT was decreased. Shootdodges now don’t spend bullet time, but Max is no more invincible during shootdodges and does not automatically reload his weapons in a shootdodge;
- Bullet camera was turned off while sniping (I always thought it was annoying). Camera shake when firing Desert Eagle and Pump Shotgun was turned off;
- Level Selector added to main menu which allows you to play any chapter you want with any difficulty.
- New sounds and textures for some weapons;
- Some minor visual changes like new blood texture etc;
- Running speed for non-enemy NPCs (transit cop, scientist in D6 etc) was increased so you don’t have to wait for them slow asses.
List of changes for version 1.1:
- Removed bulletspread for all weapons except shotguns and dual ingrams (for those, dispersion was greatly reduced);
- Max's health was slightly increased;
- Slightly reduced health for ordinary enemies (not bosses);
- Enemy accuracy a bit lowered;
- Deagle and sniper damage increased;
- Increased the amount of HP that painkillers restore and increased the healing rate from 2%/sec to 3%/sec;
- Fixed a bug with Max becoming immortal after entering cheats jump10/20/30;
- New York Minute difficulty now has 7 saves per chapter (was infinite);
- New picture for main menu.
