Various mussings about design decisions, progress on 0.93 and frequently asked questions.

Posted by Cozur on Jun 21st, 2013

0.92 has been out for less than two weeks, and have been downloaded more than thirty thousand times. That's pretty cool.

Oldtown, by Caractacus

The work being done on 0.93 is progressing smoothly, and more bugs are being eliminated every day.
However, some are yet to be fixed, though they will hopefully have been eliminated for 0.93.

The current issues are:

Red text when entering Highgarden, does not seem to affect gameplay. Caused by the aristocracy script, not a priority.
Random crashes on the world map. I've yet to figure this one out, but got some leads that I'll be working on the next few days.

Ships sometimes do not revert back to the player icon when travelling on land.

Those three are pretty much the only major issues remaining. I imagine there's still the odd bug here and there, but it's mostly minor things, such as a tree being on top of a house, stuff like that.

These are the issues that have been fixed/tweaked.

Companions now have completely new dialogue.
Some lords no longer hold the wrong fief.
Rain House and Claw Isle prison scenes have been fixed.
Bridge positions have been tweaked.
Volantis now have bridges connecting the various islands.
The Eyrie is no longer impregnable.
Lords should no longer receive reinforcements at an alarming rate.
Swords have been made a bit better.
Damage/armor modifiers have been tweaked.
Couple of items have been removed, they where superflous.
Tournaments have been fixed, should now show the correct score/timer.
Essosi lords have been given new faces, to make them more Essosi like.
Some Essosi lords have received new names, based on the dothraki and valyrian languages. Read more about those at www.dothraki.com
Tournament rewards have once again received an overhaul.
Companions have received new gear.
Ladies have been given proper clothes.
Did various tweaks to the world map textures.
Due to popular demand, the Starks have been given a new banner.
Added Caractacus' custom scenes for Stonehelm, White Harbor, Erenford and Oldtown.

These are the new features that will make an apperance in 0.93.

Cattle will now follow the player, rather than having to be herded.
Essosi castles/towns/villages have been given an overhaul. Changed their position to make them more interesting, and gave many a new name, all of them having a meaning in either Valyrian (Lys, Volantis, Myr, Tyrosh, Pentos, Lorath, Braavos) or Dothraki (Norvos), such as Pendagon -> to wonder.
And the big one: The player can now embark with his ships from various ports, and travel all over the world. Only the NPC's now have restricted waterways, the player can travel all over the ocean.

General thoughts and frequently answered questions:

A Clash of Kings is progressing pretty well. If you played 0.1, 0.2 or 0.4, you know how much it has improved. Not much else to say on this subject.

However, various questions have been asked rather frequently lately, so here's a link to the FAQ: Moddb.com

Well, although I am rather content with the player banners, it would be cool to have some more unique banners which are not related in any way to another (existing) Lord. I like all the lion banners but choosing one would always lead thinking of my as a Lennister etc...
Of course there are some independent ones but they could be a bit more iconic. So as far as I know there is no Lord with a tree. Having a banner with a tree would be nice... but why not a burning tree? That would be very unique. This is just an exemple of course. I really would like to have something like a cracked helmet or so as banner :D

samsqanch Jun 30 2013, 1:27pm replied:

Wouldn't be that unique. House marbrand has the sigil of a burning tree...

Jorah Jun 21 2013, 1:22pm replied:

It lacks the variety. It is always the same, the same lion or eagle. A ship would be great as the Three Sisters Lord.Or the banner of House Dondarrion :) I think that would be great and I hope that you think about it.

Why is the troop tree in game so bland? Most factions have basiclly the same exact troops.

What would you suggest to make it less bland?

ODell24 Jun 22 2013, 11:31am replied:

I feel like the factions should have more than two branches in the troop tree. You could add horse acrhers to certain factions and make it so maybe some fations can't even use calvery but have the best infantry. Make the differnt factions diverse and to get the best possible army you have to have a combination of all factions. Try to make it like the floris mod pack where there are tons of differnt branches with many unique and difernt troops but make them relevent to game of thrones.

RandomZombi3 Jun 22 2013, 4:44pm replied:

Just about every faction in Westeros have Knights. So lore-wise, it makes sense that they all have cavalry. I do think it would be cool to have a more diverse troop tree though. Like instead of only Spearmen - Swordsman, you could go spearmen - Pikemen / Spearmen - macemen / macemen - Swordsman / macemen - Two handed hammer / Swordsman - Two-handed swords.

Etc etc. Just an example. (:

MaxwellCromhide Jun 23 2013, 7:03pm replied:

Exactly. It makes sense that there is little diversity of soldiers in Westeros. I would personally prefer if most or all the trees were more or less the same, just with visual differences. Like kettle hats for the Stormlands, closed Sallets for the Westerlands, maybe with some minor differences in weapon preference based on region. Like it was in real life.

could you pls add swordsmen units for the north...im a big fan of the north and frankly im tired of northmen infantry only using maces and axes...other than that AMAZING mod...totally a fan! :)

Nordous Jun 29 2013, 10:35pm replied:

Yes, maybe diverse the troops by varying armor/damage correlation, i.e. making extra fast/light/shock infantry tier for ones and extra heavy infantry tier for others, emphasizing spearmen or swordsmen or macemen or pikemen for different factions, making one faction's ranged units powerfull, second's accurate, third's rapid-shooting and forth's well-armored and capable in melee; fiddling with the choice between bowmen, x-bowmen and skirmishers and so on and so forth.

That way the player would really have to deem upon tactics and study the troop-trees based on some possible consultations with masters-at-arms, that could be implemented in dialogues. ;)

I really love your work on this mod. I do have a question though, will it ever be possible to go to a Khal and challenge them to a duel for their khalasar? Like a rule by might sort of thing?

+6 votes     reply to comment
RandomZombi3 Jun 23 2013, 2:00am replied:

Would be interesting to join a Khal too. Or the Brotherhood/Brave Companions even. Either by leading them or by just joining their army as a soldier/companion.

From what I've seen in my playthroughs, the Brotherhood, the Brave Companions and the Mountain Clans get wiped out fairly easy and all end up dead or captured. :/ Same with Brienne of Tarth with King Renly. Would be interesting if they had someway of either having the function of a Lord or a Companion, or someway to come back after being defeated.

MaxwellCromhide Jun 23 2013, 6:26pm says:

I have some thoughts on this mod that I would like to share.
I originally checked out the mod in its infancy, and it has come quite a long way as of 0.92. It holds up to the standards that I expect of a Mount and Blade mod. Not nearly as good as Floris, but better than most modifications. I am aware that this mod uses Floris as its base.

There are some things that I would personally like to see adjusted. The most important being tourneys, armor and the start of the game. With tournaments being bring your own equipment, they are very hard to start out in. But when you surpass the gear of the average 40-50 armor opponent, it becomes too easy. Of course by then, tournaments are not mandatory.
I have always found tournaments to be a very good way to collect money at the beginning and middle points of the game.

Armor is also extremely powerful, and cutting damage does almost nothing to even the middle range armor until you get into high levels of power strike. And with such a limited selection of hand weapons that deal pierce or blunt damage (Especially one-hand weapons) this problem is compounded further. Of course one can just exclusively use a lance from horseback, but that is boring. One also needs to consider sieges.
In 1257AD, some axes deal piercing damage. Which I feel fits the role of the axe quite well. Since axes were for getting through armor, especially in tight places like when you're fighting knee to knee against a horseman. Something you may wish to consider.

The early game is also difficult. With so few ransom brokers for the amount of cities, it is quite a long time before one could feasibly see one. Trade is also stupidly good - I can go to a village and buy up goods for dirt cheap, and sell them to the closest town for hundreds of gold in profit.
Battles tend to be hard at the beginning as well, with enemies ranging from looters, to outlaws wearing Maille. With no middle ground, seemingly.

Lord Willam Dustin, who -was- the Lord of Barrowton, was killed during Robert's Rebellion. Only his wife is alive, so I'm assuming the reason she isn't the Lady of Barrowton is the same reason the Mormont's aren't in. Need a Lord, male, to hold a fief and be head of a house in Warband.

+1 vote     reply to comment
Dazariian Jul 2 2013, 7:39pm replied:

All of these are in the mod, with the exclusion of Eddard because at this point in ASoIaF (Spoiler) he's dead. Also I believe you're talking about the Night's Watch, Cozur has said that the reason there not in the mod is because it's too difficult to implement them correctly in Mount & Blade. If they were a faction they might declare war on another faction, which there sworn not to, and the addition of the Night's Watch would mean the addition of the far north, meaning a larger map with more map lag. Read the faq.
