You can't get recruits unless you have 100 renown. How do you get 100 renown without troops?
Mostly by doing quests.

Tournaments are a good way, too. 15 renown per win
He did this to make the early-game last longer, and I support that decision. Haven't tried it myself yet. But as Cozur and others have said, quests and tournaments are the way to go. I would also recommend enlisting into the army of a King/Marshall/war-waging lord. I'm not sure how much renown each gives you relative to one other but I bet doing all of them is an effective strategy.
This is actually a fact that early game gives the most fun :)

man i'm really struggling to get 100 renown to get troops, is there any way to disable this option?
Can anyone confirm that they've been able to make a companion into a vassal? The only time I've declared independence, and given one of my companions a castle, they told me the usual 'thank you' message, but then never showed up - and when bringing up the info on my Kingdom, it's blank under vassals.
I see that someone else above had the same issue: would love to confirm that this was a one-off bug or something that needs to be fixed before I attempt my reign of terror again...
