I personally had a bad experience with New California, that's not to say it's a bad mod, I know for a fact I caused a lot of my turmoil. For some reason I had set the difficulty to very hard, and didn't notice it until the very end of the game, and setting it back to normal turned the experience from one of the most frustrating to a very enjoyable action filled one. I also somehow managed to miss every single companion, I don't know how, but I missed out on every one, which is a little heartbreaking, I wanted to experience at least one.

One direct criticism I have is that the loadout of end game enemies have way too many grenades, even factoring in my mistake with difficulty I feel that the grenade spam towards the end is absurd, these "heat-seeking" grenades that insta-gib you nearly drove me over the edge, I wasn't able to outrun their detonation time, even with the recommended sprint mod.

But despite my lousy experience I am still looking forward to the 1.0 release, and likely will replay again when it comes through. It seems the developers are some of the most experienced and ambitious in the community.

Only think this mod has going for it is that it looks amazing, but as Jaegder said in his rating this mod tries its best to be as annoying as possible. the AI will spot you in complete darkness, anti-radiation drugs take about half your HP when used, medkits take about a good 7 seconds until you can equip weapons, anti-radiation drugs take about half your HP when used, its that kind of stuff that make this mod incredibly frustrating for play.

One of the best S.T.A.L.K.E.R. experiences I've had so far. The AI was capable, the quests we're challenging but not impossible, and emissions were amazing. Would certainly recommend for anyone craving more S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
