Black Mesa: Azure Sheep

Mod review

Definitely a lot rougher than Blue Shift but still easily a really good mod, not cluttered at all IMO I'm not sure why people think so. Walking to Inbound's ending in particular is a really really damn good level and concept.

Main criticisms are poor optimization, voice acting, a few missing textures (One of the environmental props and a decal of some sort) and Sentry Gun placement but it never really ruined the game for me.

As for the complains that it 'strays from the source material' I find that most all times it does are a marked improvement over the rather rough original Azure Sheep.
In addition the idea this has 'nothing' to do with the original is unfounded, it's a reinvention in the same way BM: Blue Shift is. Justin Barnes may be traversing a less openly goofy plotline and environment than 'Just Barney' but it is still very much the same game at its core IMO.
And just personally this version is a marked improvement though that's hardly a fair comparison given the original Azure Sheep was made by one person in 2001 whereas this has a whole team behind it.

Black-Mesa : Crush Depth

Mod review

Good recreation given the imposed limitations of working with the BM Engine (So no Combat Knife or Race X or Displacer Cannon). Only real problems I had were the lack of integration with BM Xen (Black Mesa's Xen is a real living world and not just random floating islands in space, it'd be nice for Xen levels in mods to include the degree of background environment that BM Xen does, if not the Interloper Tower itself in the distance) and a few visual bugs regarding how the water rendered.

Black-Mesa : We Are Not Alone

Mod review

Short but good recreation of We Are Not Alone. Only real complains are the lack of integration with BM Xen (Black Mesa's Xen is a real living world and not just random floating islands in space, it'd be nice for Xen levels in mods to include the degree of background environment that BM Xen does, if not the Interloper Tower itself in the distance) and the fact Gordon's animations are a little broken and you can't go through the Lambda teleporter and kill Gordon like in OP4 itself.

Half-Life : Residual Point

Mod review

Not as polished of an experience as its successor (Residual Life) but nonetheless a very good alternative view (or take?) on the Black Mesa incident.

Only real complaint is that the red legged headcrabs are a pain to fight and I'm glad RL nerfed them a bit.

Story is much more basic than the one in RL but they tie together to make this really esoteric alternative interpretation of HL1's lore that's still IMO the most inventive one in a mod to date.

9/10

Half-Life : Echoes

Mod review

Probably the most competently constructed and executed HL1 mod period, though not necessarily my personal favourite.

Great story, environment design that exceeds Half Life 1 and its expansions by miles. Fun tie ins to other entries in the franchise. Phenomenal atmosphere.

Half-Life: Field Intensity

Mod review

Half Life mod that ties into HL1, Blue Shift, OP4 and Decay super well whilst also doing its own thing.

Longer than any one of them too with some brilliant set pieces that I wished OP4 and BS would've incorporated (Particularly the Race X vs Xen stuff in the latter half).

Actually the longest mod I've ever played unless you count multipart mods (Like Timeline Trilogy) or the multiple endings of Residual Life.

All in all phenomenal mod. 10/10

Half-Life: Another Story

Early access mod review

Mainly posting this to offset the false 1/10 review. But this mod is really cool.

Hazardous-Course 2

Mod review

Really really damn hard, but not too bad if you've got a decent grasp of HL1s movement (and a guide handy). Also really funny. 9/10 because guiding Barney through the factory line sucked.

Half-Life : Residual Life

Mod review

Not perfect gameplay wise by any means but its sheer inventiveness gives it a charm that makes it probably my favourite GoldSrc HL mod. Even if Echoes or Field Intensity are objectively better constructed.

Love the secrets and multiple endings, though I couldn't get one of the boss fights to work.
