Heh, if only there was a way to do so, here on moddb... Maybe I should start my own site? ;P maybe redo this review, as it was a bit cloudy at some aspects, heheh...

And lastly: the game actually felt like it was GOING somewhere, not just some random assignment that doesn't make sense. The transitions were smooth and overall easy to cope with, but thank god for quicksave! At some point the game goes from think smart to think fast, which by the way was an EXCELLENT variation to the gameplay, perfect timing at all times.

And about the puzzles... Quite frankly, the puzzles made me laugh a few times. Not because they were lame or dorky, but rather how genious they were, once I figured them out. But the laughs started for real once you came across "Mr. Whirly". M. Bortolino, you had me at the intro of the game, and now this... This is what masterpieced the mod.

The ending even felt right, like it was supposed to feel. But unfortunately it left me craving for more. The ending however felt like you intended it so that there were possibilities for a sequel. I can only hope that you plan on continuing this overwhelming success...

And to the rest of you: TRY IT, and you'll grasp the reason as to WHY this was such an excellent mod.

First off, let me start by telling you how much I admire his selfconfidence.

Why?

This mod had NO trailers, not even teasers... I never heard as much as a word about the mod, I never even saw a news report about it before the very same day he released it! And to top it all off: The modification doesn't even have A HOMEPAGE to promote itself!

M. Bortolino is either incredibly humble, or as I said; the guy must be having a skyhigh confidence in the project. And he has all the reason in the world to be confident.

As I said earlier: this could very well have been done by Valve themselves. Not only does he manage to capture the true essence and feel to the Half-Life universe, but also manages to produce originality and innovative gameplay.

Sure, it might play and feel like good old Half-Life 2 at first, but shortly after beginning you realise that you're no longer the triggerhappy Gordon Freeman, rather a scientist of some sort, trying to follow protocols and to flee the scene unharmed, using wits instead of blasting your way around.

What strikes me is how genuine and how true the mod is to the magnificent but unused potential of the source engine. "Why didn't Valve think of this" struck me oh so many times.

At some point in the mod, not to spoil anything, it actually feels like somewhat a prequel to Half-Life 2, perhaps during the 7 year war. You get to experience something that feels like the origin of a certain "tool" that becomes commonly used in Half-Life 2... :P Can't say too much. Play the mod and find out... ;)

I've just finished the mod only moments ago, and let me tell y'all:

Research and Development is by far the BEST HALF-LIFE 2 MOD EXPERIENCE I'VE HAD IN AGES!! I can't remember the last time I had this much fun with a singleplayer modification, for ANY game for that matter.

Ofcourse there are other mentionable mods such as Curse and Minerva: Metastasis, but really: this is something else. This could very well have been done by Valve themselves! Surely, M. Bortolino is no amateur in the modding community, for the result is stunningly perfect.

I'm going to take my sweet time explaining you WHY Research & Development is an awesome modification, because the world really needs to learn of M. Bortolino and acknowledge his genius.

Hmm, speaking of new weapons... Aperture science... They brought us the revolutionary portal gun... Isn't it about time we came across an abandoned aperture lab in some mod with a weapon that could do something such as f.ex. fire a shrink-ray or a gun that could inflate people and make them explode into bits and pieces? ^^ lol, or some aperture jet-packs. Would've been loads of fun! X)

Holy snap! :O you made me want to complete Half-Life 2 again! :P If you would've done the trailer for Half-Life 2 I would've bought it without hesitation because you possess some WICKED trailer skills! :D Love how you chose to compose the trailer, great job, pretty much close to perfection!

Although sadly, as mentioned before me, I must say that for a brand new hero to thrive and achieve reputation in the Half-Life universe, Wilson's "tricks" seems pretty much the same as the ones that Gordon Freeman was packing from before. Let me sum up where I'm getting at, in case you missed my point, as a friendly suggestion ofcourse, that's all:

Maybe you could throw in couple new weapons, and generally a new twist to the main character? First off I would've ditched the crowbar. True enough, all the weapons or the most commonly known weapons to the Half-Life universe should stay in the game. I guess it would've seemed strange if the combine suddenly decided to fight you with new weapons if it's supposed to be a story happening somewhat simultaneously as Gordon Freeman's story...?

I'm just saying: If I were to make a mod (if I was barely capable of such a task that is), I think I would've avoided to use too much of the original props and weapons from the game engine's original title carrier. I would've dropped the crowbar and switched it with something that has a secondary attack to it or at least something different, and perhaps you should've thrown in some additional "story-related" weapons to spice up the level of innovation?

:) but then again, that's just my private opinion. You're doing a bang up job! Keep up the good work! :D

Hmm... I like it, but... Hope you won't be offended by this DJ TStorm and that you'll be able to take all critic instead of just positive ones. Okay here it goes:

I lack the sense of "grunge" in this song, if you see where I'm aiming at? It feels like you're playing it safe by the sound of it, your samples feels blunt and fails to bring out the promotion of excitement I seek.

Don't get me wrong, the tune is awesome! But in my opinion I think you need to use harder and heavier drums, bass or cymbals to create the desired expectations one may have to a kickass driving game.

Driving games are all about speed and action, so your song should be the same way. Right now your song builds up way too long. For a normal song, this would do great, but as a theme song for a game, it should start almost immediately.

So to sum it up, if this ends up being THE themesong for AHR, then I would personally expect a bit more "get-to-the-point" value and that it became a bit "heavier" than it is at this point...

Friendly advice, that's all... ;)

THIS is what I'm talking about. This is just the kind of music I was aiming at, to be the menu music! :) It has speed and motion, sets the game in it's right elements, gives the player the impression of action and non-stop hardcore gameplay ahead.

I like it. You should really consider using this as menu-music. I can really picture me choosing the car and track to drive on whilst hearing this music in the background. It really works... :)

PS! Come to think of it, this could absolutely work as a trailer-song as well...! :O :)

Extraordinary composition. I like it, alot! Doesn't suit as the first song one should encounter once you open the game though, too dull. It strikes me as some kind of "credits" music, or perhaps "race result" music.

Menu music should be something intriguing and adrenaline pumping to interact the player into wanting to play the game, creating a better anticipation towards the game with a catchy tune.

But after all, this is just my personal opinion... ;)

Hi guys!

The mod is looking great, even for work in progress...! It surpasses many of the released mods out there, truly amazing...

However I do have some suggestions on improvements that could be made:

I noticed after watching Magnus Mastah's showcasing, that either you're using the footstep sounds from Half-Life 2 or you're using something else, but either way; the sounds are way too loud and are not in sync with movements. If you're still using the footstep sounds, maybe you should make them more subtle and more frequent so it sounds accurate with the player's movements? And oh, one last thing; if you're using the HL2-dying sound you better get rid of it. The best way to make Berimbau feel like something of it's own, not even closely compared to half-life 2, then that's the way to go IMO...

Hope you're not offended, just a few friendly words of advice. :) I'm fully aware that it's work in progress, but I thought I'd give you a heads-up since noone else has. I LOVE what you've done with the mod, keep up the good work! ;) I'll be voting on this for MOTY2009...

By "DooM 4", are you referring to yet another sequel in the series, or are you aiming at ID Sofware's newest development, "Rage"?

I never heard anyone mentioning DooM 4, or saw anything comfirming another sequel in the series. Is there really going to be a 4th installment in the series, or is that just your hope speaking?

:P "Hell Back on Earth" (or whatever they would wind up calling it) would've been AWESOME though!! ^^

Don't get me wrong. When the word first came out, DooM 3 had AWESOME potential. Too bad it was wasted on slowpaced, boring & experimental gaming. They should've left the horror FPS idea to F.E.A.R. alone. Now THAT'S how you make a horror FPS correctly!

I never tried out multiplayer (as in deathmatch etc., I tried the coop) because... I would rather not know if it's good or not because at least then I would have an excuse to install the game again...

Well now it seems I've got two excuses; the other one would be Daze. I'm amazed how something could look so magnificent and spectacular in this old chunky engine. I was kinda hoping for an improved singleplayer somehow as well, that would unlock the true potentials of the DooM 3 engine. I hope that the players, or "NPC's" - look as good as the screens, because the original DooM 3 and Quake 4 human designers obviously doesn't know how real people look like.

Anywho I wish you all the best. I've seen alot of crap in my days, but this is definately something worth waiting for. Godspeed :)

K, first off... Gameplaywise: DooM 3 singleplayer sux ***!! And personally I never liked the story either. I'd rather play DooM 1 & 2 on Nintendo 8-bit instead of this. All of the sudden, Quake story became DooM 3, and DooM 3 became Quake 4. Seriously, what's up with the storywriting? Does it HAVE to be in space? What happened to good ol' Hell on Earth, something one could feel attached to rather than the dark and severely uninteresting terrain of D3 and Q4??

Newcomers to the series that started with DooM 3 and TRIED to play Doom 1 & 2: SIT DOWN - SHUT UP! You might just learn something. Yeah sure. Say what you want, defend the title. Still doesn't repell the fact that DooM 3 is NOTHING like it's previous games. And that's NOT a good thing. In fact, it should've been called something entirely different, because see now, all the game did was to crap all over the series.

Prior to DooM 3, ID software was THE kings when it came to FPS gaming, but now there are better alternatives thanks to Quake 1, 2 & 3. If those games didn't exist, Half-Life f.ex. would never have been created. I never see good games ever utilizing the D3 or Q4 engine. Gee, I wonder why...

And what the hell's up with the flashlight?? Like what... They know how to travel to other planets but suddenly neglected the almost prehistoric technology to attach a fricken flashlight to the gun?? GET REAL! Even pistols in OUR age has flashlights on it! Okay, so the developers chose to have it this way, but... Nightvision?? Whenever did THAT ceize to exist?? Like come on guys, I KNOW you can do better than this...
