This is looking quite a bit better! The headcrab looks quite a bit different already, however I suggest that you do a bit more to the overall "texture" of the headcrab's skin. It might look better to paint on some kind of hair.

It still requires Half-Life. To my knowledge there has never been a standalone mod that didn't go retail...? The game that is in development however, does not require Half-Life and it will be completely standalone.

We tested the mod mostly on the 1.1.1.0 version of Half-Life before Steam, so try it on that version. I believe it'll work there.

That's a weird looking crate. I'd suggest burning the text into the side of the crate to make it look a bit more realistic, like it was actually painted onto the side and grooves.

There's actually an "enhanced" version of vanilla Half-Life being actively developed by a former Sven Coop developer that has Opposing Force style ropes! You should check it out because ladders as ropes are really funky and weird in practice.

You don't necessarily need to model anything onto the headcrab to make it different. Take this for example: I57.tinypic.com I simply retextured the normal HD headcrab model and the end result makes the headcrab look almost entirely different from it's base model.

This one doesn't appear to be just a simple recolour, but I think if you make it's tendril things brown, it needs a bit more places on it's body have a similar tone. It looks a little out of place.

I'd suggest changing his fatigues (clothes) entirely and giving him possibly a new vest. If he's supposed to be a guard that is guarding really high profile areas, I'd give him a lot more armor in many places. Some shoulderpads, kneepads, thighpads, etc.

There's an actual monster version of this available in the Half-Life SDK. I'd suggest using that instead of the player model version because it looks goofy as hell as a monster.
