I have pretty much nothing to say about myself. cept the obvious of me being a computer/Linux junkie. Yeah, if you use windows, you suck, shamed to say it's the majority of you :P. I love computer gaming, and don't usually sign up to sites like this. I'm out of ideas, you can contact me on 3 IRC channels if you need to talk or anything, and/or feeling lonely you sick pervert. I travel by the alias of hirato on irc.quakenet.org, irc.gamesurge.net and irc.freenode.net, so look me up sometime :)

well, yeah, the bundled stuff is just that, the bundles stuff.
If you have textures/models/whatever worth adding, you can do it, it requires a bit of effort but it's not particularly difficult.

I'd accuse you of being blind, but I don't see cube 2 mentioned once on the moddb summary page.

but...
I54.tinypic.com
in addition to that, mike states the following at the end of most news posts...
"Platinum Arts Sandbox Free 3D Game Maker is a 3D game creator and 3D game design tool based on the Cube 2 engine [...]"

keep in mind not all planned effects are implemented yet... since I use the source code's enum in the script, the following types are unimplemented

STATUS_CRIT
STATUS_DISPELL
STATUS_DOOM
STATUS_REFLECT

that is unfortunately how it will have to be.
you should be able to use reloadtex to reload the map in windowed mode, which should allow you to draw a mostly accurate map...
This is still an experimental feature and might not stay :P

some of the 'upgrades' are of relatively questionable quality :P
it's more than sauerbraten still has a lot of old and ugly stuff, along with the new and pretty.
and in all seriousness, our 'upgrades' to the engine are quite minimal

that's what the SSP and the RPG is, examples of generic game code people can use for theirs. (though considering the coding ability of the majority, I'd say they use it anyway, with minimal modification)

a LOT less than.. pretty much any other "modern" game on the market
but I'd say the following

ram: 512MB
GPU NVIDIA 6600GT, equivalent or better (much older cards will work fine)
CPU 1 GHz or better (this shouldn't be a problem)

as far as peripherals go, a mouse and keyboard :D

it's an engine with kidified example games; if that's what you want to do, go right ahead; if you're able to code the correct systems up, you'll be fine

the only advice i can offer is install the graphics drivers, without more details, I can't help much more.

hirato @ How do you manage your development?

we at of the Platinum Arts sandbox team use a SVN, a mediawiki, a PHPBB 3 forum, and primarily IRC for communication.

I don't see how any project can honestly consider to survive without use of a versioning system, such as CVS, SVN, monotone, bazaar, git and trac just to name a few; it's perfect for finding past silly silly mistakes and errors, or undoing someone else's changes if they did something really silly. I've experience with a few other coders whose style and general code I just can't stand...

now if any of you can't really afford to host a server to contain the versioning system, you might want to consider giving an online service such as sourceforge a try (though being mods, you'd most likely have to try elsewhere; I've never set up a project on SF, so I can't say)
a quick google will also turn up services like BerliOS or OpenSVN

seriously, IRC and version control systems are a must have for any project that wants to stay above the water; if people insist on throwing the anchors out...

wikis are also important if you want people to stop harassing you whenever they want to know something, and it allows the community to contribute, and feel as though they're helping out on the project, which they do; documentation is an area which is usually severely neglected by poeple working on the engine I use

it's possible, but the engine's more suited for 3D uses, rather than 2D no a 2D plane, you're welcome to try and succeed, but the sky's the limit as far as ideas are concerned...
assuming you know how to modify things to your liking

Sauerbraten.org <-- the cube 2 engine, in all it's unmodded glory
Bloodfrontier.com <-- possibly the best cube 2 engine mod in existence

FPS' do exist in the cube 2 world, we're just not one of them right now :P

if they're related to the pads, ie the same model, I think there's a md3link command to link several loaded models together, don't forget to issue a md3load for each model

I'm assuming the on board graphics card is for the newer PC, and that it's an intel chipset

despite dealing with GPUs with I don't know how many years, their drivers still suck... sometimes cube 2 works, sometimes it doesn't, make sure the drivers are up to date

short answer: no

long answer: the map would need ot be converted into a format which the source engine can understand, and that would take a significant amount of effort. even if we wanted to support the source engine's map format, we probably couldn't find anything on it, and even then, I can barely make sense of our own, so it's beyond me, so to you, good luck :P

make sure you and your friend are using the 2.2.4 release, and not 2.2.3, there was a nasty bug with ent edits that kicked everyone cept the editor when they changed an entity, so it should at least reduce the amount of kicks drastically.

and the map changing thing, there's a /sendmap command to upload the map to the server, you can then use getmap to retrieve it, try doing a /remip first to reduce the filesize :P

I'm slightly disappointed at the " useful programs list", why was the msvc site shown when calimer was clearly talking about codeblocks

why aren't the GNU guys being thanked for gcc, make and mingw, what about SDL that's being used for all the rendering and audio (using an OpenGL rendering path of course :P)

and one of my key applications, which I use that wasn't mentioned either, is inkscape. there's random tidbits of scalable vector graphics in the newest developmental release, and even more in our current developmental repo, even though they all had to be exported as png's

the wine project should probably be thanked too, since I run codeblocks in wine occasionally to compile a windows binary... calimer hates that :P

that's really I have to complain about, good interview!

we don't know of anyone sporting servers at the moment, and we lack a master server (we have our reasons), so LAN play is all that's possible at the moment, unless you forward the needed UDP ports, 28785 and 28786 and organise the game with several buddies beforehand, and have them all connect to the server's IP, etc

you can see our wiki for more instructions, but that's pretty much it

"Wonder if it can be used and modded to create maps and worlds"
the engine itself was built around the idea of making map editing as easy and painless as possible, and it's very much done in a WYSIWYG fashion.
Source code is included (we're releasing our changes as zlib as well, just to avoid licensing headaches :P), and the scripting language is quite powerful to someone who knows how to use it (but it has it's limits and short comings), modding is encouraged, even though there's a big lack of them. The neglected blog at Cubedev.blogspot.com may interest you if you're interested in modding cube 2

"can be played as an action rpg or a shooter"
the engine ships with two games, the first is sauerbraten, which is a shooter, the second is eisenstern, an abandoned RPG in a very very early stage of development, check www.cubeengine.com

a few notes
1) the server does not need to be restarted, you just need to reconnect, the issue was with me forgetting to increase packet sizes when I activated the 5th attribute
2) 2.2.4 is currently only available from the main page... unless someone has uploaded it elsewhere

it has rather basic physics, though, it's considered to be quite sophisticated and suited towards the world structure.
