Looks pretty cool, a minimap will be useful. Will there be an easy way to make a real map over a level, or will we have to rely on taking screenshots or drawing our own maps?

that is unfortunately how it will have to be.
you should be able to use reloadtex to reload the map in windowed mode, which should allow you to draw a mostly accurate map...
This is still an experimental feature and might not stay :P

Hm, in the Source engine you can run a command that "flattens" the rendering mode (so nothing is in perspective) and basically takes a bunch of pictures of the map from above.
Maybe something similar would be codeable for this?

Description

I've wanted to do either 1 of two things to indicate to the player nearby objects...
the first idea was to use a HUD compass, ie, arrows all over your screen pointing to enemies and objects and friendly creatures.
the second is a minimap, and this is a quick proof of concept minimap

simply a circle is drawn via GL_POLYGON using 16 vertexes, and filled with the map, a quad is then overlayed, and the overlay itself is good enough to hid the vertexes. This also currently shows the player's correct position on the world.

it'll eventually show blips of nearby enemies, creatures, items, and I'm hoping to allow users to create blips too, should they desire to for whatever reason. (ie, the result of a quest they scripted to help give the player a few bearings).

for those that want to play with it, run sandbox in RPG mode and type /testminimap 1
