I am an amateur texture artist working for mod projects in my spare time. Currently I am a member (as texture artist, historian, designer and code monkey) of “The Great War 1918” team, a WW1 modification for Company of Heroes. I also assist the Verdun Online project, an indie FPS game project set in WW1 and using the Unity engine, as historian. Amongst other projects I made textures for "His Righteous Mod" (under the nick Grenadier), a modification for Dawn of War.
Bavarian model 1886/1914 officer's Pickelhaube (spiked helmet)
In 1914 the Imperial German Army went to war wearing their dashing headgear inherited from late 19th century military traditions (although covered with drab cotton covers in the field for the sake of camouflage).
The Pickelhaube, made of boiled leather with brass or silver fittings, proved of little use in modern warfare. In September 1915 spikes where ordered to be removed when the helmet was worn on campaign. Then from April 1916 on it was gradually replaced on frontline service by the new Stahlhelm.

So impractical, they stood out to much, don't get me wrong I love how decorative they are ... Any how how did you come across these magnificent finds?
My father was acquainted with an old lady who wanted to make a flower pot with some strange helmet she found in her attic.
It was a timely rescue.
I've got a second one from her too, but alas it's not in a very good condition. I'll spare you the depressing picture until I restore it.
